RASHIS COVERED: Ex38-24b Ex38-26a Ex38-26b

VALUE OF KIKAR,BEKAH

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex38 lists
- The Total silver accumulated for the Mishkan
- How many people donated

THE TEXT Ex38-24:26
-------------------
The Total Silver donated was 100 KIKAR and 1775 SHEKEL...
The donation amount was 1 BEKAH per PERSON
There were 603,550 PEOPLE

THE RASHI
---------
Some simple algebra allows us to combine these facts to obtain
the value of the currency units used

ONE KIKAR = 3,000 SHEKEL
ONE SHEKEL= 2 BEKAH

Upon multiplying out we see 3000*2 + 1775*2 = 603,550

THE LIST
--------
The list below lists these verses, supporting verses, and
the algebraic equations needed to solve the above
AMOUNTAMOUNT OF WHAT UNITASSUMPTIONALGEBRAIC EQUATION
100KIKARK = Sx*1
1775SHEKEL
1BEKAHS=2B*2
603,550PEOPLE1P = 1B*2100K+1775S=603550B*3
COMMENTS

*1 We assume that
-- the each KIKAR (K) was equal to an UNKNOWN amount (X)
      of SHEKEL, S

*2 Ex38-26 States [There was 1 BEKAH donated for Each Person]
Ex30-13 states [Each person will donate HALF A SHEKEL]

Hence I conclude that ONE SHEKEL = 2 BEKAH (S=2B)
or equivalantly that each person donated 1 Bekah

*3 We can solve this equation as follows
   100K+1775S = 100 Sx + 1775S by Substitution K=Sx
   100 Sx + 1775S =S(100x+1775) (by Factoring)
   Thus S(100x+1775) = 603550(S/2) = 301775(By Expansion)

Dividing both sides by S we obtain 100X+1775= 301775
Subtracting 1775 from both sides we obtain 100X = 300000
Dividing both sides by 100 we obtain X = 3000

In other words there were 3000 Shekels Per KIKAR*10 *11
LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10 This amount (3000 @ Kikar) is also consistent with with
the fact that the SHekel units for GOld, Silver and copper
   --- 730, 1775, 2400 -- never exceed 3000 (Since then we
   would regroup can carry)

*11 Interestingly the five rules used to solve this
   system of equations
   - Factoring
   - substitution
   - Expansion
   - subtraction (from both sides)
   - Division (of both sides)
are exactly the 5 rules needed to solve any equation in
   1 unknown

Nu04-28 Confirms Ex38-21

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex38 gives an accounting of all received donations for the
temple.(How much Gold, Silver, Copper was received)

THE TEXT
--------
This is an accounting of the Temple, the temple of Testimony,
which was overseen by Mosheh: The work of the Levites at
the hand of Ithamar the Priest

THE RASHI
---------
Ex38-21 does not detail WHAT the Levites or ITHAMAR did.
Further details are provided in Nu03 thru Nu04. In particular
Nu04-28 shows that certain subclasses of the Levites were
appointed to carry and disassemble the Temple and these
Levites were overseen by Ithamar.

THE LIST
--------
Rashi here uses the technique of OTHER VERSES. The above
reference shows 6 usages of the technique of OTHER VERSES.
One usage of OTHER VERSES is to provide MORE DETAIL. The
list below repeats some examples with the 2 new Rashis
that we just covered The first few examples are
amplified in the footnotes

COMMENTS

*1 Lv01-05 says SOMEONE should SLAUGHTER while 2Chr adds it
can even be a Levite (not necessarily a Priest)

*2 Dt26 states that A FEW Jews came to Egypt while Gn46
   explains that 70 gave

*3 Nu36 discusses a daughter inheriting while Nu27
illustrates HOW a daughter might inherit

*4 Gn21 states that Avimelech treated Abraham nicely
while Gn20 details HOW he treated him nicely(By
   giving him land)

VERSE: Ex38-21a

Ex38 is ACCOUNTING SHEET

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex35 thru Ex40 describes the construction of the temple

THE LIST
---------
The list below divides this portion of the Bible into 9
distinct paragraphs each with its own topic sentence.
The list gives where the Paragraph BEGINS, where it ENDS
and the paragraph TOPIC

THE RASHI
---------
As can be seen from the list below
- Ex35-04 thru Ex38-20 describe the CONSTRUCTION of utensils
- Ex38-21 thru Ex38-31 describe the ACCOUNTING of materials

In other words, in Ex35 we find HOW the Temple utensils
were made while in Ex38 we find HOW MUCH Gold, silver & copper
were used.

THE VERSE/RASHI
---------------
Thus Ex38-21 is really a Topic sentence
which describes that chapter
-------------------------------------
THIS is an ACCOUNTING of the temple *1
-------------------------------------
BEGINENDPARAGRAPH TOPIC
Ex35-04Ex35-29Donations for TEmple
Ex35-30Ex36-07Craftsman for temple
Ex36-08Ex38-20Construction of Temple Utensils
Ex38-21Ex38-31Accounting of Metals in Temple construction
Ex39-01Ex39-32Accounting of Materials in Priestly garments
Ex39-33Ex39-43Review of Utensils and Garments by Moses
Ex40-01Ex40-16Order by God to construct the Temple
Ex40-17Ex40-33Moses Implements this order of God
Ex40-34Ex40-38God Reveals Himself
COMMENTS

*1 Ex39-01 thru Ex39-32 do NOT deal with accounting and DO
deal with construction of the Priestly garments (That is
the Bible relates HOW MANY units of Gold, Silver and
copper were used in the temple while the Bible does
not mention how much Blue & Red wool were used) Thus
I dont fully understand why this paragraph is located
after the Accounting vs Before the accounting (that is
it might be more logical to connect the CONSTRUCTION of
utensils with the CONSTRUCTION of garments rather than
connect ACCOUNTING of UTENSILS with CONSTRUCTION of
garments). Perhaps someone out there knows an answer.

RASHI RULE USED: OVERALL STRUCTURE

VERSE: Ex38-21b

REPEATED WORDS, BROADEN A CONCEPT

BACKGROUND
----------
Ex38-21 is describing the building of the temple

THE TEXT
--------
This is an accounting of the TEMPLE, the TEMPLE of testimony

REFERENCE
---------
http://www.RashiYomi.com/doubl-14.htm

THE RASHI
---------
Notice how the above VERSE repeats the word TEMPLE twice.
Repeating words is a BIblical technique. In the above reference
we outline 4 methods in using this technique of REPETITION.
One method is to BROADEN the concept of the word and include
borderline cases.

Thus here by saying TEMPLE TEMPLE we emphasize that these
measurements and accounting apply not only to the temple
of Moses but also to ALL future temples such as those of
Solomon and Ezra.

THE LIST
--------
The list below repeats from the URL above some examples
of REPEATED WORDS and what is inferred from them. The
list includes the new Rashis we are doing today.
VERSETEXT OF VERSEMEANING OF REPETITION
Nu17-28aAll who come NEAR NEAR ...Even if it was crowded
Gn08-21bGod will not destroy not destroyNo matter how evil*8
Gn26-13a& Isaac >GREW GREW<Even his manure*9
Dt33-18aDAN..DAN ZVULUN..ZVULUNEven if weaklings*10
Ex38-21bThis is the TEMPLE TEMPLEEven Solomons Temple
COMMENTS

*8 The implication is that God will never destroy the
world no matter how evil man becomes. (Rashis language
is that >God took an oath not to destroy the world<
But all that Rashi meant was the emphasis that God
would not destroy the world in any circumstances)

*9 >GROWTH< is usually associated with assets and workers
Rashi points out here that Isaac >GREW IN ALL RESPECTS<
   >EVEN< his manure was coveted.

LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10 Rashi here cites a fundamental controversy in approach
to REPETITION. Genesis Rabbah 95:04 and Baba Kama 92a
both deal with the problem that of the 12 tribes
blessed by Moses only 5 of them have their names
repeated in the blessing (in Dt33). Thus eg it says
   >And to DAN Moses said/blessed: May DAN be like a lion<
Thus this blessing REPEATS the word DAN while other
blessings use pronouns when re-refering to the tribes.

Genesis Rabbah suggests that these 5 people were the
   >STRONGEST< of the tribes (So REPETITION denotes
the CHOICEST). By contrast, Baba Kamma suggests that
these 5 were the >WEAKEST< (So REPETITION denotes
that they are tribes in >ANY< circumstances EVEN
though they are not as strong as the other tribes).

After reviewing this controversy in Gn47-02a Rashi
decides in Dt33-18a in favor of the TALMUD.

Using the above LISTS we can easily understand why.

   >REPETITION< can only denote >CHOICEST< if there is
some other EMPHASIS INDICATOR like >THE< or >OF<
This is discussed in METHOD 1 above. By contrast
METHOD 3 shows that ordinary REPETITION broadens
the meaning of a word to include non standard
circumstances. Hence the implication would be
   >You are my tribe EVEN if you are a weakling and
   are not what I expect<.

Gn49-04 Reuven PLAYED with fathers BEDS
CONCLUSION: Reuven inteferred with fathers personal
life(ruffled bedspreads); Bible condemns Reuven by
exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do

=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------
Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
			   while DOING ITS WORK

* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
            --------------------------------------------------
Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
	   (EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS

* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
            --------------------------------------------------
Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
	  (EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
(GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
