COMMENTS |
*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
schools or home-schooling situations.

TRADITIONAL GRAMMAR |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Rashi has 6 main goals in his commentary. One of them is the
explanation of Grammatical theory. Classical Hebrew Grammatical
theory asserts that the Hebrew language rests on 3-letter roots.
Each root is assigned a meaning. These roots can be CONJUGATED
in various ways to indicate TIME(Past, future), PERSON (1st,
2nd, 3rd), PLURALITY (singular vs plural), etc. Thus SHMARTI
means I HAD WATCHED while TISHMERI means SHE WILL WATCH. Nu22-25
contains the root Lamed-Cheth-Tzade in 2 modes (Passive active)
Rashi translates: The Donkey was SHOVED (Passive) into the wall
and then SHOVED (Active) Bilam into the wall
REFERENCES
----------
The RashiYomi Grammar page: http://www.RashiYomi.com/grammar.htm
There are many classical references and modern books on Hebrew
grammar. My favorite however is the terse but comprehensive
appendix to IBN SHOSHANS Dictionary (Volume 5 has about 2
dozen tables covering most of classical Hebrew grammar)
TODAYS LIST
-----------
Todays list is a LIST of verses with similar forms.
Note that ACTIVE conjugation is RARE (See the footnotes
and examples) |
MODE | ROOT | ROOT-form | IBN SHOSHAN |
PASSIVE | Nu22-25 | Tee-La-Chaytz | Table 1; Full roots |
PASSIVE | Gn06-11 | Tee-Sa-Chaytz | Table 1: Full roots*1 |
ACTIVE | Ps38-03 | Vat-Tin-Chas | Table 1: Footnote #10*2 |
ACTIVE | Gn13-11 | Vay-Yiv-Char | Table 1: Footnote #10*3 |
ACTIVE | Nu05-27 | Vat-tim-ol | Table 1:*4 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Many examples are taken from the Grammatical Form
Konkordance of Alfred Silberman Form 4619
*2 The traditional form is Vat-tif-kod. The rarer form
Vat-tin-Chas is sometimes used particularly when the
the second root letter is guttural (These exceptions
are indicated in Footnote #10 of Ibn Shoshan and may
have motivated Rashi to comment here since the conjugation
is rare and as a Masorite Rashi particularly commented on
Rare items)
*3 Also see Silbermans Grammatical Form Konkordance--form 4509
*4 Silberman Form 4557. Note according to Silberman NO 1-chet-3
root is conjugated with a PATACH AND an overturning VAV.
However Form 116 in Silberman shows Ve-Niv-Char (not
ve-niv-chor)
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 I have advanced the idea that Rashi particularly commented
on grammar when the grammatical phenomenon
- was RARE
- or reflected a confusion with a SIMILAR FORM.
In this verse we have
- The rare occurence of the PATACH ACTIVE FUTURE
- 2 forms of the same verb in the same verse
This probably motivated Rashi to comment
My opinion is that Rashi was not really a commentator but
rather a MASORITE who was trying to preserve the Biblical
text---the commentary was secondary. For a full discussion
as well as a DATABASE definition of Rarity see my
full (Technical) article on the Rashi rules at

RASHI RULE USED
#*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2002, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
VERSE: Nu23-17a
ALIGNMENT--NUANCES |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY:
-------------------
Alignment Nu23-17 with Nu23-06 shows the following differences
------------------------------------------------------------
Nu23-06 ALL Moabite princes were with him to request a curse
Nu23-17 --- Moabite princes were with him to request a curse
------------------------------------------------------------
The implication is that the second time NOT ALL the princes
were there. The obvious suggestion is that when they saw
that God did not want to curse the Jewish people some of
them left. These subtle nuances show the delicate interplay
between a Leader and Advisor
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.
But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.
The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances. The standard example will illustrtae this.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Recall that the Moabite King BALAK was apprehensive about
Israel journeying throught its territory. It wanted Israel
banished. It hired a professional curse-man, Bilam who would
curse the Jews. Bilam however describes his job SLIGHTLY
differently. Here are the verses.
-----------------------------------------------
BALAK: Nu22-06 I will banish Jews FROM THE LAND
BILAM: Nu22-11 ...... banish Jews -------------
-----------------------------------------------
EXERCISE
--------
To fully appreciate Rashi perform the following 2 exercises
- What is the minor difference between the aligned verses?
- What NUANCE do YOU think this implies?
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
BALAK only wanted Jews away from his land; his goals were
political. By contrast, BILAM wanted them DESTROYED. Hence...
BALAK wanted Jews BANISHED FROM THE LAND. But Bilam wanted
them BANISHED PERIOD (That is destroyed).

Or you can visit the Rashi Yomi Calendar at

This calendar presents a day by day listing of Rashis.
The ALIGNMENT series occurs between 7-28-01 and 10-10-01.
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
following exercises
-- What are the minor differences between the verses
-- What nuances do they imply
The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
Here is the list mentioned above |
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE 2 |
Nu23-06 | ALL | Moabite princes were with him to request curses |
Nu23-17 | --- | Moabite princes were with him to request curses |
Differs | *1 | *2 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 On the first request ALL princes were there while on the
2nd request only [SOME] of the princes were there.
Apparently they lost heart when they were refused the 1st
time. (A similar interplay between advisors and Leaders
is shown in Ex08-15

VERSE: Nu23-03a
GOD PROPHESIES AT NIGHT |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
We know from Nu12-06 (or from Job33-15) that God usually
appears to prophets at night. THerefore when Bilam in Nu23-03
states
----------------------------------------------------
Let us offer sacrifices; MAYBE GOD WILL APPEAR TO ME
----------------------------------------------------
Bilam was referring to the fact that God usually does not
appear by day to prophets
---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE
One way of doing this is to cross reference a
verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives
FURTHER details.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah
Dt26-05 states that
-------------------------------
With only a FEW PEOPLE did the
Jews go down to Egypt
-------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of
the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is
provided in Gn46.
EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading the Rashi try reading
Gn46 yourself and see if you can
discover the further details.
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi cites Gn46-27
-----------------------------
The total number of people who
came with Jacob to Egypt is 70
-----------------------------
Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES
in this case has explained to us that
the FEW PEOPLE that went down to
Egypt refers to SEVENTY people

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then you
can present the verse in the first column
(eg Dt26-05) and the CHAPTER (but not the verse)
in the 3rd column---e.g. Gn46.
The student is then instructed to discover
the further details. The students solution
can then be compared with Rashis.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We add the above verse (About God appearing at night) to
this long list of examples) (It is now on top) Note the
similarity to the Rashi on Nu36-08a (*3) |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | OTHER VRSE | DETAILS |
Nu22-03a | God MIGHT appear to me | Nu12-06*2 | Prophesy by night |
Nu36-08a | a daughter who inherits | Nu27-08 | If no sons*3 |
Lv14-03a | Expel lepers from CAMP | Lv13-46 | From all 3camps*1 |
Lv13-46b | Expel lepers from CAMP | Lv13-46 | From all 3camps*1 |
Nu05-02b | Expel impure from CAMP | Ex13-19 | impure to dead*1 |
Lv01-12a | the THANK YOU OFFERING | Ps127-01 | 4specific cases |
Lv01-05a | Slaughter Sacrifice | 2Chr30-17 | A Levite Can |
Ex17-10b | Chur | 1Ch2-18:19 | Kalevs son |
Ex35-30a | Chur | 1Ch2-18:19 | Kalevs son |
Ex24-14c | Chur | 1Ch2-18:19 | Kalevs son |
Dt26-05d | A FEW Jews came to Egypt | Gn46-27 | 70 people came |

Dt25-13b | Dont have big STONES | Lv19-36 | Big STONE WEIGHTS |
Gn26-05e | because ABRAHAM OBEYED | Gn22-18 | He offered Isaac |
Lv10-03a | Rligious death snctifies | Ex29-43*8 | Justice Emphasis |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 First some background: There were 3 camps
-- There was the TEMPLE which had the highest holiness
-- Outside this was the CAMP OF LEVITES (Nu02-17)
-- Outside this was the CAMP OF TRIBES (Nu02)
These camps surrounded each others like concentric
squares (The Temple in the center, the Levites
surrounding them, the tribes surrounding the Levites)
Nu05-02 states that ALL IMPURE PEOPLE should be expelled
from the camp without specifying which one.Rashi-is-Simple
- Lv13-46 states that the LEPOR should be ISOLATED. Hence
he is expelled from ALL 3 camps
- Ex13-19 states that Moses took the bones of Joseph with
him. But Moses was a Levite and dwelled among the
Levites. Hence we infer that someone who is impure
because of contact with the dead may stay in the LEVITE
camp but may not stay in the TEMPLE CAMP.
- We find no permission for the Zav to be in the Levite
camp and we do have a requirement for the Lepor to
be isolated. Hence we infer that the Zav may dwell in
the Israelite camp (so as to leave the lepor ALONE)
but may not dwell in the Temple or Levite camp.
The Talmud (Pesachim 67) goes into further details and
alternative derivations but the above captures the
flavor of the argument which is based on other verses.
*2 As mentioned above also see Job33-15
*3 In both these cases (MAYBE GOD WILL APPEAR TO ME) and
(WHEN A DAUGHTER INHERITS) Rashis OTHER VERSES sheds
light on THE POSSIBILITY of this happening...that is
WHAT COULD Trigger it off.
If there were no sons then the daughter inherits
Similarly traditional prophecy happens by night
so that if Balak could not be certain of an immediate
prophecy. In each instance Rashi brings other verses
to shed light on the possibility of something occuring
|
RASHI RULE USED: OTHER VERSES
#*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi Inc., 2002, Dr. Hendel, President #*#*#*#*#
VERSE: Nu24-25a
ALSO..ALSO means BOTH |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Nu24-25a states ALSO DONT CURSE THEM...ALSO DONT BLESS
THEM. The repeated ALSO style is an idiom that denotes an
emphasis on BOTH items being treated EQUALLY. Bilam had learned
that you dont get SOMETHING for NOTHING. Every request for a
curse from God resulted in a blessing. So at this point Bilam
EQUALLY did not want the Jews CURSED or BLESSED--since no matter
what he did they would be blessed. Another good example occurs in
Ju08-22--ALSO YOU ALSO YOUR CHILDREN WILL RULE US. This is MORE
than a statement that BOTH will rule--it is a statement that
him and his children would be EQUALLY RESPECTED
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE AND SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of
words the same way a dictionary does. But Rashi not explains
the meaning of WORDS but also explains the meaning of PHRASES.
Each WORD in a phrase may have a clear meaning but the PHRASE
as a whole may have a nuance that goes beyond its individual
words.

http://www.RashiYomi.com/words.htm
TODAYS LIST
-----------
We gather several verses where the ALSO-ALSO style is used.
We show how this style indicates an emphasis on BOTH ITEMS
BEING TREATED EQUALLY. Note one need not use a CD ROM to
obtain these lists. The Masorites left us long lists of
verses that exhibit strange patterns thousands of years
before the advent of computers. |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE*1 | EMPHASIS OF BOTH |
Ju08-22 | Both YOU and YOUR SON will rule us | Equal respect |
Nu24-25a | Dont BLESS them;Dont CURSE them | Leave me alone |
Gn24-25 | We have GOOD & CHEAP FODDER | Can accomodate |
Gn32-20 | He commanded the 1st,2nd... | Equal emphasis*2 |
Gn43-08a | Neither you,us,or animals will die | Equal emphasis*3 |
Gn44-16a | Both the thief & us are yours | Treat us as a group |
Ex04-10a | I always stuttered--today,yesterday | Equal stuttering*4 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The Biblical text uses the idiom ALSO ALSO. We have
omitted this literal translation because it isnt idiomatic
in English. Instead we have used the word BOTH, NEITHER
AND etc. The important nuance of EMPHASIS OF BOTHNESS is
brought out in the 3rd column
*2 Normally you lose interest when you repeat something.
In this case he had the same seriousness and interest
when he repeated his words
*3 In other words we are not just saying that their will
be food for us and the animals but rather there is an
emphasis that there will be EQUAL FOOD for us and the
animals---despite the famine the animals, ourselves and
you (our leader) will eat the same.
*4 Moses point here was DESPITE the fact of a divine revelation
he still stuttered the same. Since therefore there was no
hope of curing it it wouldnt be appropriate to send a
stutterer to a King.

CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
There are 4 major ways paragraphs connect: a) CAUSE
b) ENABLING MERIT c) UNIFYING THEME d)CONTRAST
The 2 Rashis in this posting concentrate on
2 paragraph pairs. Nu22-01 explicitly connects Balaks desire
to curse the Jews with the Jewish conquest of 2 nearby kings--
this conquest was A CAUSE of Bilams fear which led him to
want their destruction. Similarly Nu21-01a juxtaposes Aarons
death with the declaration of war by Amalek--Amalek reasoned
that the death of a Righteous person left the nation demoralized
and weak--thus Aarons death ENABLED war.

TODAYS LISTS
------------
We present 4 lists exhibiting examples of the 4 methods
In this list we present examples of juxtaposition from
CAUSE |
# | VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER |
(01) | Nu06-02a | Adulterous wife rite | Nazaarite from wine*1 |
(02) | Gn38-01a | Brothers sell Joseph | Judah leaves brothers*1 |
(03) | Gn23-03c | Abraham offers Isaac | Sarah dies*1 |
(04) | Gn02-20a | Adam Eve are Naked | Snake gives Eve Apple*2 |
(13) | Nu22-01a | Jews win a war | Moab concerned about war |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite"
will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine
Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph"
and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he
had to "separate from them."
Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham
offered Isaac."
*2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked
therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so
he could marry Eve.
ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting
evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form
"And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had
a child"
So the sequence of chapters is
"Adam was lonely"
"God makes Eve"
"Adam and Eve are naked"
------------------------"Snake tempts Eve"
"Adam has a child with Eve"
Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is
clearly interrupted by the Snake story.
|
ENABLEMENT |
In the examples below the topic in the 1st chapter FACILITATED
or ENABLED the topic in the 2nd chapter |
# | VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER |
(05) | Dt20-01a | Judicial process | Laws of War*1 |
(07) | Nu20-02a | Miryams death | And there was no water*1 |
(08) | Gn21-01a | Egypt had chidren | Sarah had a child*2 |
(14) | Nu21-01a | Aarons death | Amalek attacks Israel*3 |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 In the merit of our following "Judicial process" we will
be able to "win wars"
Similarly after Miryams death there was no water. Thus
we have that in the merit of "Miryam" the Jews had water
*2 Again a close examination of the BIblical text shows a
past perfect
"And God punished Avimelech and his household"
"And Abraham prayed for Avimelech & his household"
"But God HAD ALREADY VISITED Sarah with a child"
In other words Sarah had already had a child.
The Bible deliberately juxtaposes "sarah having a child"
with "Abraham praying for Avimelechs household to have a
child" to teach us
"That whoever is a kind person and
prays for others will have their own
needs met first"
*3 Amalek decided that the death of a righteous person
would demoralize the people and make winning a war easier
|
CONTRAST |
The examples in this list show 2 paragraphs that CONTRAST
each other. The key idea is to see the 2nd paragraph
holding DESPITE the event of the 1st paragraph |
# | VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER |
(09) | Lv26-01a | Being a slave to Non Jew | Prohibition of Idolatry*1 |
(10) | Dt29-12a | Curses | We are before God*2 |
(11) | Lv19-03c | Fear Parents | Watch Sabbaths*3 |
(12) | Dt22-12a | No Shaatnez | Tzitzith*4 |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 On a superficial level Rashi seems to be connecting 2
verses.
Avoid idolatry DESPITE your being a slave to a non jew
(who encourages its violation). Do not think "I will
worship idols now and when I am free I will go
back to believing in God" See *10 for a deeper reason
*2 Dt28 gives a long list of curses if the Jews violate
the commandments.
Dt29-12 says "You are all STANDING before God today" In
other words despite the curses for disobediance you are
still here before God(The implication being that no
matter how angry God gets he will not destroy you)
A further support for this theme can come from the
General-particular-General form
Dt28 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance
Dt29-12 PARTICULAR: You are standing here before God
Dt29-19 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance
Thus the General-Particular-General form shows that Gods
curses still allow us to "Stand before him"--in other
words they are educative curses not punitive.
*3 In other words (always) "Observe the Sabbaths"
DESPITE a request to the contrary "By your parents"
This can happen if eg your parents ask you to
desecrate the Sabbath. You must observe the
Sabbath even if your parents request to
the contrary.
And this can be generalized to all Torah laws(that
they take precedence over your parents request)
*4 Wear Tzitzith DESPITE the fact that they may have Shaatnez
Wool and linen together (In the priestly garments made of
Linen the Tzitzith were made of wool--thus the commandment
of Tzitzith OVERRIDES the prohibtion of wearing wool and
linen)
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10
On a profound level Rashi sees a unifying theme to this
whole chapter. The chapter encourages observing the
shimitah laws which encourage abstaining from agriculture
once every 7 years so that people can devote themselves
to God and study. If one violates these laws he is
progressively punished. Here is the sequence of
punishments
{LIST} {Paragraphs in BEHAR}
-------------------------------------------------------
VERSE LAW
----------- ------------------------------------------
Lv25-01:12 Observe the 7 and 50 year Land sabbaticals
Lv25-13:24 If not you will have to sell your MOVABLES
Lv25-25:28 If not you will have to sell your LAND
Lv25-29:34 If not you will have to sell your HOUSE
Lv25-35:38 If not you will have to LOAN
Lv25-39:46 If not you will have to become a SLAVE
Lv25-47:54 If not you'll become a NONJEWISH SLAVE
Lv26-01:03 If not you'll be tempted to IDOLATRY
-------------------------------------------------------
Thus Rashi does not merely teach juxtaposition of verses
but he also teaches juxtaposition of ALL paragraphs in
the chapter. As such this example would belong to the
next category
| |
UNIFYING THEME |
In this list although Rashi comments on the juxtaposition
of the starred paragraphs the theme of MOSES DEPARTING AS
LEADER applies to all paragraphs. |
TOPIC OF PARAGRAPH | VERSES |
Pinchas(not Moses)avenges public non-jewish sex | Nu25-11:18 |
Elazar is to prepare for war with Midyan | Nu26-01:51 |
Laws of division of Israeli land | Nu26-52:56 |
Completion of deaths from sin of Spies | Nu26:57-65 |
Laws of inheritance for girl-only families*1 | Nu27-01:11 |
Moses makes Joshua leader before his death*1 | Nu27-12:23 |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 Rashi only comments on these paragraphs. But clearly
the unifying theme of Moses departing applies to all

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)
==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================
* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
--------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
- Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)
* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols
RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
