COMMENTS

*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
   schools or home-schooling situations.

*2 This is an EMAIL LIST. It is YOUR LIST. If you have a question
ask it. If you dont have a question, read my postings till you
find something you dont like and ASK. If you dont find
something you dont like you are not reading properly!

My favorite story is what I told Rabbi Boncheck when he
   visited Shomrey Emunah
   -------------------------------------------------
I write an EMAIL list. You wrote a BOOK.
The difference is that I can easily retract any
mistakes. You will find that more difficult since
the 1st version of the book will always be around

Rabbi Boncheck nodded with a smile

(I think this is the only thing we agreed on)

    Subject: rashi france
    To: rjhendel@juno.com

    Hi !
My name is Aurite (paris, france),
and maybe you could help me. I have a
probleme with a traduction of Rashi,
    particularly with some words called
    "belaaz":-1samuel, 18; 27

    -1 samuel, 19;13
    i thank you
you could , if you want, send me your answer on to

    Auriteb@aol.com
    ---------------------- END OF QUESTION ------------------

------------- ANSWER: HOW TO USE THE RASHI WEBSITE ------

    Aurite
Thank you so much for your question.
1Sam18-25:27 would be translated as follows
    ---------------------------------------------------------
And the Kings servants told David that he did not have
to give money but rather kill 100 Philistines in order
to marry the Kings daughter....And David liked this
idea and he killed 200 Philistines...and HE PAYED IN
    FULL TO THE KING
    ----------------------------------------------------------

Rashi-is-simple: The root Mem-Lamed-Aleph means FULL
Hence in the above sentence Mem-Lamed-Aleph means
    PAID IN FULL.

Another usage of this occurs in Gn23-09 where Abraham tells
Ephron I WILL PAY A FULL PRICE.

You will ask: How did you know this? Do you know French?

NO! The Torah promises us that learning the Torah is
--SOMETHING VERY VERY ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYBODY--(Dt30-11:14)
You dont have to be a Scholar in French to understand the
Bible! Any person can learn the Bible by making lists.

So....if you want to use the Rashi website
    STEP 1
    ------
visit the rashiyomi word page at

    http://www.RashiYomi.com/words.htm

This contains Rashis focusing on WORD MEANING. (Similarly
    http://www.RashiYomi.com/grammar.htm contains Rashis focusing
    on Grammar).

    STEP 2
    -------
Use your internet browser EDIT-FIND feature to look up the
    root MALAY.

    STEP 3a
    -------
You will find in the list the 7 meanings of MALAY (FILL A PAIL,
FILL A JEWEL SETTING, FULL PRICE, FILL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS..)

    STEP 3b
    -------
You can also find verses there giving examples of each word
    meaning

    STEP 3c
    -------
You can also hyperlink to lists of similar word meanings.

In summary you can BYPASS the need to know OLD FRENCH (What
Rashi called LAAZ). You can simply use LISTS to understand
    Rashi.

I wish you success in your future studies

    Respectfully
    Russell Jay Hendel; http://www.RashiYomi.com/

VERSE: Dt01-12a

3 METHODS OF COURT BURDEN

RASHIS COVERED: Dt01-12a Dt01-12b Dt01-12c

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY:
-------------------
- Dt01-12 Moses states: How can I bear your
- BURDEN, BEARINGS and FIGHTS
There is no traditional way to uncover the meaning of
the Hebrew roots used in Dt01-12 For example the Hebrew root
Tet-Resh-Caph (BURDEN) only occurs 2 other times in the Bible.
Instead of using OTHER VERSE references, Rashi infers meaning
based on his GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF ATTRIBUTES of LAWSUITS.
Rashi, based on his knowledge of lawsuits identifies
3 areas of burden: a) to many witnesses; b) To many
counterarguments; c) To many lawsuits

-----------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: EXAMPLE8
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: INFERRING MEANING-BY EXPERTISE
-----------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
There are many ways to find out the meaning of a word
- The simplest way is to LOOK IT UP IN A DICTIONARY
This works with KNOWN words

- If the word is not standard, still, there may be
many verses with similar usages. Hence a 2nd
popular method of infering meaning is based
on a review of SIMILAR VERSES

- If there is no dictionary lookup
and no verse lookups
we might infer meaning BY OUR GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF
AN AREA OF KNOWlEDGE.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Dt20-03 states that in a war we should
- not be SOFT-HEARTED
- not be AFRAID
- not be ANXIOUS
- not be STUNNEd

There is no basis- either in the
Hebrew dictionary or in other Biblical verses --to relate
these items to more specific nuances. Rashi simply lists
the 4 components of war
- FEAR OF TRANSPORTATION SUPERIORITY(e.g. horses, tanks etc)
- FEAR OF COMMUNICATION SUPERIORITY(battle singles)
- FEAR OF SUPERIOR MORALE (not shaken up by losses)
- FEAR OF SUPERIOR RESOURCES (guns, shields etc)

The only way to justify this Rashi is to connect the 4 words
used with the 4 known aspects of war. Thus this is inference
based on EXPERTISE.

We emphasize our contribution. Rashi can NOT be understood
-- based on the usage of these roots in other verses
-- based on the meaning of these roots.
Rather the ONLY way to justify Rashi is
-- we have PREknowledge of what goes on in war AND ARBITRARILY
connect these concepts with the roots in the verse
We call this method the method of EXPERTISE since meaning is
inferred--not from the Bible itself--but from expertise outside
the Bible.

STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE
---------------------------------
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/example8.htm

Many readers are SHOCKED at my assertion that Rashi can NOT
be justified by reference to other verses or roots. A review
of the examples in the above reference should convince the
reader that this position is indeed correct.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
Dt01-12 contains 3 words referring to BURDENSOME
court cases. Rashi interprets these 3 words as referring
to the 3 ways of burderning the court system.
ROOTIDEAEXAMPLES IN RASHI

COMMENTS

*1 Remarkably the root Tet-Resh-Caph only occurs 3 times
   in the bible
   -----------------------------------------------------
   VERSE MEANING OF VERSE
   ------- ---------------------------------------------
Jb37-11 Thru saturation He BURDENS the cloud
Is01-14 Your holidays are a BURDEN for me
Dt01-12 How can I bear your BURDENS
   -----------------------------------------------------
Thus it is clear that the technique of REVIEWING SIMILAR
verses does not shed light on the meaning of Tet-Resh-Caph

*2 Rashi gives the following example
   ----------------------------------------------------
-If they saw Moses leave his house early they argued
that he was having marital problems.
-If they saw Moses leave his house late they argued
    he was plotting against people
   ----------------------------------------------------

But we neednt be so cynical.

Simply--the whole idea of a law suit is that 2 people
interpret the same action differently. Thus I might
claim you owe me money because of a loan and you might
counter that you perceived the loan as a payoff of a
previous debt and not a new loan.

For a verse with connections between the roots Nun-Shin-Aleph
and R-Y-V see Gn13-06 but again this does not shed light
on the meaning of the root

*3 The traditional meaning of R-Y-V is a
   LAWSUIT or DISPUTE--for example Dt25-01

-When two people have a R-Y-V(Dispute) and they
-approach the court for a resolution and the

MUTIPLE RULE RASHI
------------------
With this posting we are embarking on a new method of analysis
Several postings will now display MULTIPLE RASHI RULES. The
purpose of this series is to show how multiple rashi methods
combine to yield a holistic interpretation of Rashi.

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt01-01:03 states roughly as follows
- Moses spoke to the Jews
- AFTER
- He had won the two wars with Sichon and Og
The style issue is how to clarify the CONNECTION of
these 2 consecutive sentences. In the reference below we have
presented 4 methods of CONNECTION. In this case the connection
reason is one of SUPPORT & ENABLEMENT. Moses did the Jews a favor
in conquering these 2 kings--HENCE the Jews should listen to him
SINCE Moses defeated POWERFUL KINGS and NATIONS

-------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: GRAMMAR
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: CONNECTING PARAGRAPHS
-------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: INFERRING NUANCES
-------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: WORD MEANINGS
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: 4 LETTER ROOTS
-------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
One of Rashis main tasks is to explain Hebrew GRAMMAR.
GRAMMAR traditionally includes the conjugation of verbs
BUT Grammar also includes rules of style such as the
way we connect consecutive paragraphs in an essay.
In the reference below we enumerate 4 methods of connecting
paragraphs
-- CAUSE (e.g. Jews conquered a nation;HENCE Balak was afraid)
-- ENABLEMENT (e.g. Aaron died; HENCE Jews were vulnerable)
-- UNIFYING THEME (e.g. Many Number chapters deal with slander)
-- CONTRAST (Dont worship idols EVEN if you are sold to a nonjew)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
One powerful method of inferring meaning is by ALIGNING
similar verses. This exhibits minor differences. Since
the verses are identical EXCEPT for these minor differences
we can assume they are there intentionally. This allows us
to infer meanings. In the reference below 4 methods of
inferring meaning from alignment are described.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
One of Rashis main goals is to explain the meaning of
words like a dictionary. Most words in Hebrew come from
3 letter roots. However there are a few dozen 4 and 5
letter roots in Hebrew. The Talmudic Grammarians typically
explained the meaning of 4 letter roots as coming from
the two letter roots which make them up.(Rabbi HIrsch
believe that all roots are 3 letters).

TODAYS LISTS
------------
The 5 Rashis on Dt01-04 proceed in 3 stages.
STAGE 1
-------
In stage 1 we CONNECT the two verses
-- Moses conquered the 2 Emorite kings, Sichon and Og
-- Moses lectured the Jewish people
The CONNECTION between these 2 sentences is CAUSE--
The Jews OWED it to Moses to listen to him BECAUSE he did
them a favor and conquered the two Emorite Kings

STAGE 2
-------
Rashi now strengthens the PERCEPTION of the favor Moses
did the Jews. Moses didnt conquer ANY KING. He rather
conquered FORMIDABLE foes--Kings who were powerful who
sat in powerful kingdoms. The double emphasis on BOTH
the powerful Kingdom and powerful King may be inferred
from an ALIGNMENT of all verses that talk about SICHON,OG
This is the substance of LIST 1.

STAGE 3
-------
Rashi further strengthens the PERCEPTION of the Power
of the Kingdomes that Moses fought by doing a 4
letter root analysis of the names of these Kingdoms
This is the substance of LIST 2

All together, Rashi is making a holistic point:
Moses won a war against POWERFUL POWERFUL kings;
HENCE
The least the Jews should do is listen to him.

Here are the lists.

Dt03-46Sichon Emorite Kingin ChesbonOg King Bashan

COMMENTS

*1 The full text is
    -----------------------------------------------------
God said dont fear them for I will give them over
to you THE SAME WAY I GAVE OVER TO YOU SICHON
    AND OG, THE EMORITE KINGS
    ------------------------------------------------------

This verse by itself emphasizes the POWER of the EMORITE
Kings. When this verse is contrasted with Dt01-04 we
see an emphasis on the POWER of both the KINGS and
    their CITIES.

ETYMOLOGY OF 4 LETTER ROOTS

We give a list below of 4 and 5 letter roots whose meaning
comes from a combination of 2 two-letter roots. This gives
rise to the following etymologies

-- ASTAROTH - the city of someone WHO MADE (ASH) a DESTINY(TOR)
for themselves*4

-- EDREII - The country that turned a DESOLATE AREA (II) to
A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY (EDR)*5

Here is the list

These etymologies strengthen the favor that Moses did the
Jews--he conquered big and powerful nations. Hence since he
did the Jews a favor they should listen to him. Thus these
etymologies support Rashis main point--BECAUSE Moses did
the Jews a favor therefore they owe it to listen to him

COMMENTS

*1 There are two approaches to 4 letter roots. Sometimes we try and
see them as 2 two letter roots and sometimes we try and see them as
a 3 letter root with an extra letter. Thus ASTR is explained in the
Talmud as ASR. Rav Hirsch stuck to the 3 letter approach even in
obvious cases--thus he takes MMZR from MZR a rare word in Job.

*2 Note the poetic lisence in e.g.
SRAF = BIRD(AF) POT (SiR)= Something for Bird nests
This type of small poetic lisence is common in etymologies and makes
their study difficult

*3 Note the finer nuances in some translations. For example ZLAF
occurs rarely in TNACH and its meaning is inferred from its context.
The RDQ in his book of ROOTS says its meaning is
SOME TYPE OF FRIGHT....this could go well with
the verse cited by RDK: "fright has overtaken me"

But perhaps a "better" translation is
feeling worthless and tired So that the verse with
ZLAF would mean "worthlessness & faigue has overtaken me"
Then again perhaps there is no way to see which translation
is better

*4 The root Tauv-Resh has 5 meanings. Its primary meaning
is SCOUTING A LAND. But it also refers to the DESTINY
of a person--the path that the person has scouted out
for himself in life. This is an official meaning listed
by the Radack in the Book of roots. Here is the citation
   -------------------------------------------------------
2S07-18:19 (David) I am just a small person And Yet
You, God, have spoken of the things that will
happen to me--and this is the DESTINY of a GREAT PERSON
   -------------------------------------------------------

Rashi, besides explaining the etymology gives a VERSE
   support *10

*5 Remarkably Rashi
   - DOES give the etymology of ASTAROTH
   - DOES NOT give the etymology of EDREII

But his reasons for giving the etymology of ASTAROTH--to
strengthen the favor Moses did the Jews apply equally to
EDREII. Furthermore, the Same etymology principle applies
equally to ASTAROTH and EDREII. Hence we consider this
a legitimate application of the Rashi principles.
LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Gn014-05 explicitly identifies ASTAROTH as the home of
    the REFAIM

Dt02-11 explicitly identifies the REFAIM as a powerful
    nation.

The gist of these two verses is that ASTAROTH is the
    home of a powerful nation.

Rashi gives further details but the main thrust
is that ASTAROTH was a powerful place.
