*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
   schools or home-schooling situations.

*2 This is an EMAIL LIST. It is YOUR LIST. If you have a question
ask it. If you dont have a question, read my postings till you
find something you dont like and ASK. If you dont find
something you dont like you are not reading properly!

My favorite story is what I told Rabbi Boncheck when he
   visited Shomrey Emunah
   -------------------------------------------------
I write an EMAIL list. You wrote a BOOK.
The difference is that I can easily retract any
mistakes. You will find that more difficult since
the 1st version of the book will always be around

Rabbi Boncheck nodded with a smile

(I think this is the only thing we agreed on)
   --------------------------------------------------

*3 Rashi on Dt01-24a states that the Levites did not
participate in the Spies. The RAAM, a noted Rashi
commentator asks: But that is easily inferred from
the list of spies which does not contain levites!!!!!!
See our analysis of the Raams question and the
   sifsay chachamims answer below.

*4 Ron Mitnick asks the following question on Nu28-04

   Rashi states
   -------------------------------------------
The chapter dealing with the DAILY OFFERING
is repeated in Nu28 and Ex29-38:46---as Ex
deals with the consecrtation offerings while
Nu deals with the daily offerings
   -------------------------------------------

   Ramban asks
   --------------------------------------------
   But
   a) It says that the daily offerings are FOR
      ALL GENERATIONS (Ex29-38:46)

   b) How can Rashi act like Nu28 is extra when
there are many inferences of nuances from it

VERSE: Dt01-18a

ALL has 5 MEANINGS

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The word ALL has 4 usages
-- all PARTS
-- NO EXCEPTIONS
-- all SUBGROUPS
-- even BORDER LINE Cases
So when the Bible states (Dt01-18a) that MOSES COMMANDED
ALL THE JUDICIAL THINGS THAT HAVE TO BE DONE, Rashi explains
that this includes even BORDER LINE cases of the law like the 10
subtle differences between Monetary and Capital cases

------------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: SPECIAL WORDS
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: ALL
------------------------------------------------------

BRIED DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals was to function like a dictionary
and present the meanings of words. Certain words like --
EVEN, ONLY, ALL, USUALLY, BECAUSE --- occur very frequently.
Rashis job was to give the primary usages of these words.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Consider the word ALL. It has 4 primary usages
- ALL of Sedom gathered for the rape (ALL=NO EXCEPTIONS)
- Dont defile to ALL dead (ALL=All body PARTS)
- ALL Jewish people complained that night (ALL=EVEN leaders)
- ALL flesh corrupted (ALL GROUPS--people, animals, birds..)
Thus ALL can mean
-- NO EXCEPTIONS
-- ALL PARTS
-- EVEN BORDER LINE CASES (Like leaders in a nation)
-- ALL GROUPS (Even people, animals, birds)
The main references below give further elaboration.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how: If you are a teacher then you
can present the major meanings of ALL to a class
You can then ask them to
-- to find verses with the word ALL
-- see which meaning of Rashi applies
The students can then compare their answer with that
of Rashi. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We present below the list of verses where ALL means
EVEN BORDER line cases and include the new example.
VERSETEXT WILL "ALL"INCLUDES EVEN THE FOLLOWING
Lv24-14aALL hearing the BlasphemyEven the judges *1
Nu14-01aThe WHOLE nation rebelledEVEN the LEADERS *2
Lv14-09aCut ALL hairEven non-dense hair *3
Ex12-43bALL foreignersEven Jewish apostates *4
Dt20-11aALL conquered willbe yoursEVEN from other nations *5
Ex12-12bI'll smite all 1stbornEven from other nations *5
Gn43-09bI'll owe you my WHOLE lifeEVEN in the next world
Dt13-01aListen to ALL commandmentsEVEN the light ones
Dt01-18aMoses commanded ALL to doEVEN subtle details*6
COMMENTS

*1 ALL people (even judges who heard testimony) must stone
   the blasphemer

*2 ALL people cried at hearing the spies story (Even the
   leaders)

*3 Thru the GENERAL PARTICULAR GENERAL principle we learn
that only dense-visible hair (like eyebrows) has to
be shaved. This is learned by generalizing the examples
in the verse ("head", "beard", "eyebrows")

Thru the word "ALL" we learn that even non-dense or
non-visible hair (like armpit hair or outer-arm-hair)
   should be shaved.

Thus the two items--GENERAL-PARTICULAR-GENERAL and ALL
teach us that ALL is shaved except NOSE-HAIR

*4 Neither foreigners nor Jewish Apostates can bring offerings

*5 Thus eg God smote the Firstborn of Egyptians and also the
firstborn of other nations who were visiting Egypt

*6 Rashi GIVES AN EXAMPLE: Moses even commanded the 10
differences between Monetary and Capital cases.

There is no reason to suppose that Rashi EXHAUSTED the
meaning of the verse in this interpretation. Rather,
it is the word ALL that motivated Rashi. We therefore
perceive Rashis literal remarks -- the 10 differences
between civil and Capital cases -- as being an EXAMPLE

VERSE: Dt01-19a

GREAT & AWESOME = SNAKES/SCORPIONS

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt01-19a AND YOU JOURNEY THRU THIS GREAT AND AWESOME DESERT
Rashi explains the phrase GREAT AND AWESOME DESERT. Surprisingly
this phrase only occurs 2 other times in the Bible. In Dt08-15
it gives more detail: GREAT & AWESOME DESERT WITH SNAKES ..
SCORPIONS. Hence I infer that GREAT & AWESOME DESERT means a
desert with SNAKES & SCORPIONS.

We can perceive this derivation as using EITHER the method of
OTHER VERSES or the METHOD OF ALIGNMENT--both justify inferring
meaning.

----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: INFERRING MEANING
----------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE

One usage of other verses is when an enigmatic word
occurs in several verses. If just one of these verses
contains more detail then we can infer the meaning of
this enigmatic word (This rule is also one of the 13
Rabbi Ishmael Style rules which states that
------------------------------------------------------
If one verse stands out from a collection of verses
then it doesnt just stand out for itself but for
the whole group of verses; This justifies transference
of meaning to the other verses
------------------------------------------------------

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Todays example is as good as any other
---------------------------------------------------------------
Dt01-19a ... this GREAT & AWESOME desert
Dt08-15 ... this GREAT & AWESOME desert with SNAKES..SCORPIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------

EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading Rashi
-- WHAT PHRASE is repeated in both verses
-- Using a Konkordance or search engine, does this phrase
occur elsewhere in the Bible
-- What clarification does Dt08-15 give to the phrase
GREAT & AWESOME desert

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi simply explains that GREAT & AWESOME desert means
a desert with SNAKES & SCORPIONS

COMMENT:
--------
Note: That this method is almost the same as the use
of the ALIGNMENT method to discover meaning (The
difference being that ALIGNMENT applies even in the
same verse while the OTHER VERSE method applies to
2 distant verses)

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then when you
find an enigmatic phrase you can instruct your
student to
-- search for similar phrases elsewhere in the Bible
A Konkordance or search engine will help on this

-- try and find one verse where MORE DETAIL is given
on the meaning of this verse

-- try and transfer this meaning to the other verses

The students solution can then be compared with Rashis.
Very often the student can do as well as Rashi. This
inspires confidence in the students since they see
that Rashis commentary emanates from scholarship, not
from authority.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We present the ALIGNMENT of the two verses shedding light on
this unknown phrase below.
VERSEPHRASE1PHRASE2
Dt01-19a... this GREAT & AWESOME desert
Dt08-15... this GREAT & AWESOME desertwith SNAKES..SCORPIONS
Differs*1*2
COMMENTS

*1 These 2 phrases are the same. The phrase GREAT AND AWESOME
desert only occurs thrice in the Bible

*2 This phrase is extra in Dt08-15. This phrase suggests that
SNAKES & SCORPIONS is an EXPLANATION and CLARIFICATION
of GREAT & AWESOME. Hence the technique of OTHER VERSES
   justifies transferring the meaning

LEVITES DIDNT PARTICIPATE IN WARS

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt01-22:23 mentions how the Jews asked to send spies to find out
how to conquer the land--and Moses then picked 12 spies, one
per tribe. On a simple literal level, since only 12 spies
were selected--one per tribe--it follows that the Levites did
not send spies. On a deeper level, the spies were sent to find
out how to best conquer the land. But the Levites did not
participate in the wars of conquest for they did not inherit
land(They worked in the temple)--this is explicitlys stated 3
times in the Torah. Hence they had NO NEED for spying. Hence
we infer that the Levites saw no need for spying.

----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER NUANCES
----------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.

But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.

The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances. The standard example will illustrtae this.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Recall that the Moabite King BALAK was apprehensive about
Israel journeying throught its territory. It wanted Israel
banished. It hired a professional curse-man, Bilam who would
curse the Jews. Bilam however describes his job SLIGHTLY
differently. Here are the verses.

-----------------------------------------------
BALAK: Nu22-06 I will banish Jews FROM THE LAND
BILAM: Nu22-11 ...... banish Jews -------------
-----------------------------------------------

EXERCISE
--------
To fully appreciate Rashi perform the following 2 exercises
- What is the minor difference between the aligned verses?
- What NUANCE do YOU think this implies?

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
BALAK only wanted Jews away from his land; his goals were
political. By contrast, BILAM wanted them DESTROYED. Hence...

BALAK wanted Jews BANISHED FROM THE LAND. But Bilam wanted
them BANISHED PERIOD (That is destroyed).

The ALIGNMENT series occurs between 7-28-01 and 10-10-01.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
following exercises

-- What are the minor differences between the verses
-- What nuances do they imply

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We align the two parshas that talk about the spies in the
LIST below. As can be seen the emphasis in Dt is on sending
spies for purpose of conquest. Hence it follows that the
Levites that did not participate in conquest were not at all
involved in the spying.
Dt01-22:23Nu13-02:20
People approachedGod said
Lets send distinguished people*1Send the princes of the tribe
who will spy the landto spy the land
And tell us how to conquerSee how fortified they are
ANd I(Moses)thought this idea goodSend if you want*2
And I took 12 people-1 per tribe*31 person per tribe
COMMENTS

*1 Rashi Nu13-03b shows that the nuances of the word ISH
means a DISTINGUISHED PERSON. We are simply supplementing
this observation with the explicit statement that God
ordered Moses to send the PRINCES

*2 Rashi Nu13-02b derives this from the use of the indirect
object TO which when used with a verb always denotes
   personal activity.

*3 Of course there is an added emphasis in Dt--1 per tribe
TWELVE PEOPLE. But a more direct approach is the
emphasis in Dt on PEOPLE WANTING TO KNOW WHICH CITIES
TO CONQUER FIRST--HOW TO CONQUER (This request is absent
   in Nu).

It follows that the SPYING is directly linked, in Dt,
to CONQUEST. Hence since the LEVITES did not participate
in CONQUEST or in division of land--see Dt18-01:02 or
Dt10-08:09, Nu18-23:24, it follows that they did not
   participate in the SPYING*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 It is interesting that on Rashis comment
    ------------------------------------------------
The Bible states TWELVE TRIBES--ONE PER TRIBE---
this teaches that the Levites did not participate
    in the SPYING.
    ------------------------------------------------

The great Rashi commentator, RAAM, states that

   ------------------------------------------------
But I could have simply counted the 12 tribes
mentioned in Numbers 13...In other words I
could have inferred this detail of Rashi from
Nu13. Why then does Rashi state what he does
   ------------------------------------------------

The Sifsay Chachamim, another great Rashi
commentator brings this down and answers

   -----------------------------------------------
From Nu13 I would infer that the Levites did
NOT WALK TO ISRAEL TO SPY.

From Dt01 I infer that the Levites did not
   agree INTELLECTUALLY WITH THE SPIES

This is consistent with Rashis language that
the LEVITES DID NOT FOLLOW THEIR ADVICE
(Thus Rashi is not speaking about NOT GOING
with the spies but not following advice)
   -----------------------------------------------

I would go a step further. The above distinction
-- NOT GOING vs NOT AGREEING -- can also be
inferred from the nuances obtained by aligning
   the Parshah.

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
When God created the Garden of Eden He created 4 rivers. The
Bible explains that these rivers surrounded the countries of
CUSH and ASSYRIA. But CUSH and ASSYRIA werent even born for
over a 1000 years (See Gn10-07:11)
Rashi is Simple: The OBJECTS were named by what they would BE
RADACK gives an example of this: You name cookie dough based
on what WILL happen to it--it will be COOKED. So this is a
Rashi rule that words can be named on what they will become
(In some cases the items were named by prophets)

THE LIST

The list below gives examples of Rashis where things are
named because of future events. The last item in the list
is new.

COMMENTS

*1 God designated the Moon for holidays even though holidays were
   not proclaimed till Ex12

*2 God blesses the Sabbath at creation even though the double
manna blessing doesnt happen till Ex16

*3 The rivers surrounded the countries of KUSH and ASSHUR.
But these countries werent so named for another 1000 years
(See Gn10-07:11 where the people founding these countries were
   born)

*4 See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/gn10-25a.htm which
discusses how the grammar of the verses indicates that
SPLIT was named by what happened at the end of his life*10

*5 Moses and Aaron were judged at this place several 100
years later. (Rashi cites Oonkelos who suggests that
it was not necessary to cite the prophecy of future
judgement since it is reasonable that this was a place
of courts where people came for judgement cases)

*6 It says that Moses came to the mountain of God even though
the 10 commandments and the revelation of God on this
mountain did not happen for several years.

*7 The spies cut a cluster of grapes to bring back to the
Jews as an example of Israeli fruit. Hence the river is
named by what the spies WOULD DO--they would cut a CLUSTER
   OF GRAPES

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Roughly speaking the text says as follows
    ---------------------------------------------------
His name was SPLIT because the world was split up(eg Gn11-09)
But his brother had ALREADY HAD children who lived in the
EAST (home of the tower of Babel which caused the split up)
    ---------------------------------------------------

The past perfect(HAD ALREADY HAD) suggests that the
SPLITTING up happened after the tower of Babel (In other
words SPLIT was named by what happened at the end of his
life) See the url cited above for more details.

VERSE: Nu28-04a

DAILY OFFERINGS-PROPHECY & SANCTITY

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The obligation of offering 2 sacrifices a day appears twice
in the Bible-once in Ex29-38:46 and once in Nu28-01:08.
-Ex29-38:46 talks about the CONSECRATION OF THE TEMPLE
-Ex29-38:46 uses the daily offerings to bring about prophecy
By contrast
-Nu28-01:08 talks about the periodic offerings
-Nu28-01:08 so the 2 daily lambs might indicate SANCTIFYING
our mundane life on a daily basis.
Hence it was necessary to state two chapters: One for the
consecration of the temple and one for our daily life.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
---------------
To Ron Mitnick for asking about this Rashi. Ramban brings
very strong questions
- How can Rashi state that Ex29 is for the consecration when
in fact it says in Ex29 FOR ALL GENERATIONS
- How can Rashi act like Nu28 is an extra chapter when in
fact many laws and nuances are derived from it.

After reading the list below you can find complete answers
in footnote #10

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We simply align the two chapters Ex29 and Nu28.
- Nu28 simply speaks about bringing two lambs
- Ex29 ALSO speaks about
-- consecrating the temple
-- bringing about prophecy among the Jewish people
This leads to inferences that there are TWO TYPES Of
daily lamb offerings. One for consecration-prophecy
and one for our daily lives. See the footnotes for more details
Ex29-38:46Nu28-01:08
Offer 2 lambs per dayOffer 2 lambs per day
For all generations offer on altar*1
at the place where I give prophecy*2
And I will give prophecy there
and be sanctified in holiness
And I will sanctify the temple
And I will dwell amongst the Jews
COMMENTS

*1 Rashi would interpret this phrase as follows
   ----------------------------------------------------------
WHENEVER you build a Temple--such as the Temples in Shiloh
or King Solomons--you are required to have a consecration
ceremony for 7 days during which you will offer 2 lambs
   per day.
   ----------------------------------------------------------

Such an interpretation is consistent with Ex25-09
   --------------------------------------------------------
Build the temple utensils like I am showing you...and
perform similarly (in the future when you build temples)
   --------------------------------------------------------

In other words ALL ASPECTS OF BUILDING THE TEMPLE--the
utensils and the consecration ceremony--apply to future
   temples that were built

*2 The literal Hebrew is I(GOD) WILL MEET WITH YOU but
throughout the Bible this is a reference to prophecy.

At any rate Ex29 clearly links the OFFERING OF
2 LAMBS PER DAY with the EVENT OF GOD PROPHESYING
   AND DWELLLING AMONG THE JEWS.

Hence we infer two reasons for offering 2 lambs per day
-- As a means of consecrating the temple and bringing
holiness and prophecy to the Jewish people (Ex29)

-- As a means of sanctifying our daily life by
      offering lambs every day (Nu28)*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10
Ron Mitnick asks the following question on Nu28-04

   Rashi states
   -------------------------------------------
The chapter dealing with the DAILY OFFERING
is repeated in Nu28 and Ex29-38:46---as Ex
deals with the consecrtation offerings while
Nu deals with the daily offerings
   -------------------------------------------

   Ramban asks
   --------------------------------------------
   But
   a) It says that the daily offerings are FOR
      ALL GENERATIONS (Ex29-38:46)

   b) How can Rashi act like Nu28 is extra when
there are many inferences of nuances from it
   -----------------------------------------------

   We completely answer Ramban above

The distinction between 2 lambs per day FOR THE
CONSECRATION OFFERING vs FOR THE DAILY OFFERING
   answers the Rambans 1st question.

   The CONSECRATION OFFERINGS applied
   - to all generations whenever we built a temple
   - had a purpose of bringing prophecy to the people

   The DAILY OFFERINGS applied
   - AFTER the temple was consecrated
   - had a goal to sanctify our mundane life

As to Rambans second question I would simply say that
   there are two issues
-- why are there many nuances in the sentences
-- why place these sentences in a SEPARATE PARAGRAPH
In other words Rashi would agree that the nuances in
Nu28 were needed to infer many laws. BUT RASHI HELD
THAT THESE EXTRA NUANCES COULD HAVE BEEN INSERTED IN
   Ex29.

Rashis real question is why repeat the whole PARAGRAPH?
(Rambans point is about the individual PHRASES not
   about the whole paragraph)

Finally I would close this answer to Rons question by
pointing out that we seem to have one of Rabbi Ishmaels
   rules here

   ----------------------------------------------------
   If a law (DAILY OFFERING)
   belongs to a group (OFFERINGS)
and went out of that group (CONSECRATION Ex29)
then you dont have the right
to restore it to the group
   until the Bible does so
   explicitly
   ------------------------------------------------------

Hence the BIble had to RESTATE the daily offerings
in Nu29 which deals with the group of all periodic
   offerings. Otherwise inferences about PERIODIC
offerings would not apply to the daily offering.

The reason they would not apply is because the daily
offering was special in that it was used for the
   consecration offerings.

YASHER COACH RON for an excellent question
