COMMENTS |
*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
schools or home-schooling situations.

CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
There are 4 major ways paragraphs connect: a) CAUSE
b) ENABLING MERIT c) UNIFYING THEME d)CONTRAST
The 2 Rashis in this posting concentrate on
2 paragraph pairs. Dt03-29a states that the Jews dwelled
for a while in Peor where they sinned with Moabite harlots.
The very next chapter states that if Jews observe Gods word
then they will earn eternal life. So Rashi-is-Simple and
interprets the juxtaposition as indicating CONTRAST.
- DESPITE your sins, NEVERTHELESS if you observe Gods
- commandments you will earn eternal life

TODAYS LISTS
------------
We present 4 lists exhibiting examples of the 4 methods
In this list we present examples of juxtaposition from
CAUSE |
# | VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER |
(01) | Nu06-02a | Adulterous wife rite | Nazaarite from wine*1 |
(02) | Gn38-01a | Brothers sell Joseph | Judah leaves brothers*1 |
(03) | Gn23-03c | Abraham offers Isaac | Sarah dies*1 |
(04) | Gn02-20a | Adam Eve are Naked | Snake gives Eve Apple*2 |
(13) | Nu22-01a | Jews win a war | Moab concerned about war |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite"
will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine
Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph"
and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he
had to "separate from them."
Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham
offered Isaac."
*2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked
therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so
he could marry Eve.
ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting
evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form
"And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had
a child"
So the sequence of chapters is
"Adam was lonely"
"God makes Eve"
"Adam and Eve are naked"
------------------------"Snake tempts Eve"
"Adam has a child with Eve"
Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is
clearly interrupted by the Snake story.
|
ENABLEMENT |
In the examples below the topic in the 1st chapter FACILITATED
or ENABLED the topic in the 2nd chapter |
# | VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER |
(05) | Dt20-01a | Judicial process | Laws of War*1 |
(07) | Nu20-02a | Miryams death | And there was no water*1 |
(08) | Gn21-01a | Egypt had chidren | Sarah had a child*2 |
(14) | Nu21-01a | Aarons death | Amalek attacks Israel*3 |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 In the merit of our following "Judicial process" we will
be able to "win wars"
Similarly after Miryams death there was no water. Thus
we have that in the merit of "Miryam" the Jews had water
*2 Again a close examination of the BIblical text shows a
past perfect
"And God punished Avimelech and his household"
"And Abraham prayed for Avimelech & his household"
"But God HAD ALREADY VISITED Sarah with a child"
In other words Sarah had already had a child.
The Bible deliberately juxtaposes "sarah having a child"
with "Abraham praying for Avimelechs household to have a
child" to teach us
"That whoever is a kind person and
prays for others will have their own
needs met first"
*3 Amalek decided that the death of a righteous person
would demoralize the people and make winning a war easier
|
CONTRAST |
The examples in this list show 2 paragraphs that CONTRAST
each other. The key idea is to see the 2nd paragraph
holding DESPITE the event of the 1st paragraph The new
example is added on at the bottom |
# | VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER |
(09) | Lv26-01a | Being a slave to Non Jew | Prohibition of Idolatry*1 |
(10) | Dt29-12a | Curses | We are before God*2 |
(11) | Lv19-03c | Fear Parents | Watch Sabbaths*3 |
(12) | Dt22-12a | No Shaatnez | Tzitzith*4 |
NEW | Dt03-29a | We sinned by PEOR | God gave good statutes*5 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 On a superficial level Rashi seems to be connecting 2
verses.
Avoid idolatry DESPITE your being a slave to a non jew
(who encourages its violation). Do not think "I will
worship idols now and when I am free I will go
back to believing in God" See *10 for a deeper reason
*2 Dt28 gives a long list of curses if the Jews violate
the commandments.
Dt29-12 says "You are all STANDING before God today" In
other words despite the curses for disobediance you are
still here before God(The implication being that no
matter how angry God gets he will not destroy you)
A further support for this theme can come from the
General-particular-General form
Dt28 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance
Dt29-12 PARTICULAR: You are standing here before God
Dt29-19 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance
Thus the General-Particular-General form shows that Gods
curses still allow us to "Stand before him"--in other
words they are educative curses not punitive.
*3 In other words (always) "Observe the Sabbaths"
DESPITE a request to the contrary "By your parents"
This can happen if eg your parents ask you to
desecrate the Sabbath. You must observe the
Sabbath even if your parents request to
the contrary.
And this can be generalized to all Torah laws(that
they take precedence over your parents request)
*4 Wear Tzitzith DESPITE the fact that they may have Shaatnez
Wool and linen together (In the priestly garments made of
Linen the Tzitzith were made of wool--thus the commandment
of Tzitzith OVERRIDES the prohibtion of wearing wool and
linen)
*5 Actually the two verses state as follows
----------------------------------------------------------
We then moved to PEOR [where the Jews sinned with harlots]
But now Jews [simply] listen to the statutes & commandments
that I give you this day in order that you shall live
-----------------------------------------------------------
Rashi emphasizes that these two verses are linked by contrast
-----------------------------------------------------
DESPITE your sins in Peor
NEVERTHELESS if you simply do Gods word then you will
earn eternal life
------------------------------------------------------
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10
On a profound level Rashi sees a unifying theme to this
whole chapter. The chapter encourages observing the
shimitah laws which encourage abstaining from agriculture
once every 7 years so that people can devote themselves
to God and study. If one violates these laws he is
progressively punished. Here is the sequence of
punishments
{LIST} {Paragraphs in BEHAR}
-------------------------------------------------------
VERSE LAW
----------- ------------------------------------------
Lv25-01:12 Observe the 7 and 50 year Land sabbaticals
Lv25-13:24 If not you will have to sell your MOVABLES
Lv25-25:28 If not you will have to sell your LAND
Lv25-29:34 If not you will have to sell your HOUSE
Lv25-35:38 If not you will have to LOAN
Lv25-39:46 If not you will have to become a SLAVE
Lv25-47:54 If not you'll become a NONJEWISH SLAVE
Lv26-01:03 If not you'll be tempted to IDOLATRY
-------------------------------------------------------
Thus Rashi does not merely teach juxtaposition of verses
but he also teaches juxtaposition of ALL paragraphs in
the chapter. As such this example would belong to the
next category
| |
UNIFYING THEME |
In this list although Rashi comments on the juxtaposition
of the starred paragraphs the theme of MOSES DEPARTING AS
LEADER applies to all paragraphs. |
TOPIC OF PARAGRAPH | VERSES |
Pinchas(not Moses)avenges public non-jewish sex | Nu25-11:18 |
Elazar is to prepare for war with Midyan | Nu26-01:51 |
Laws of division of Israeli land | Nu26-52:56 |
Completion of deaths from sin of Spies | Nu26:57-65 |
Laws of inheritance for girl-only families*1 | Nu27-01:11 |
Moses makes Joshua leader before his death*1 | Nu27-12:23 |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 Rashi only comments on these paragraphs. But clearly
the unifying theme of Moses departing applies to all

COMMAND can mean ASSIGN |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The Hebrew word TSAV usually means COMMAND some order. However
TSAV can also mean to ASSIGN SOMEBODY (To COMMAND him to take
a post). Using this distinction of COMMAND vs ASSIGN we can
easily understand the Rashi on Dt03-28a,b. Rashi translates
the verse as follows
- And [you Moses] ASSIGN Joshua; strengthen and encourage
- him THAT he will lead the people into the promised land
Conceptually Rashi links the subordinate clause HE WILL LEAD
THEM with the STRENGTHENING & ENCOURAGEMENT
TODAYS RASHI RULE: MULTIPLE RULES
---------------------------------
- We use the Rashi rule of WORD MEANINGS-SYNONYMS to distinguish
between COMMAND and ASSIGN
- We use the Rashi rule of SPECIAL WORDS to interpret KI as
meaning THAT vs BECAUSE. That is we translate Dt03-28a as
---------------------------------------------------------
ASSIGN Johsua and strengthen him into believing
THAT he will lead the people over to the promised land
---------------------------------------------------------
We ignore the translation of KI as because
---------------------------------------------------------
And COMMAND Joshua [to be leader] (and strengthen him)
BECAUSE he has been picked to be the leader
---------------------------------------------------------
We ignore this translation because the phrase [to be leader]
is not in the verse. The lack of a specific command in the
verse motivates us instead to translate the verse as ASSIGN
TODAYS LIST
-----------
We LIST below verses where TSAV means TO ASSIGN vs TO COMMAND.
You can distinguish between the two meanings by the prepositional
connective used: Thus Dt28-08 states, God will ASSIGN WITH YOU
a blessing. Cf this with Is05-06, I will order the clouds FROM
giving dew. The context usually clarifies this. |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH tsav TRANSLATED AS assign vs command |
Dt28-08 | God will ASSIGN WITH YOU blessings in your harvest |
Ne11-23 | For the meal of the singers was AN ASSIGNMENT of the King |
Lv25-21 | I-ll ASSIGN my blessings to you & you-ll have a good crop |
Dt03-28 | And ASSIGN Joshua and strengthen him;for he will lead |
Is05-06 | I will ORDER/COMMAND the clouds FROM giving dew *1 |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 This is brought for contrast. Is05-06 contains a COMMAND
-- COMMAND
-- TO the clouds
-- FROM giving dew
This contrasts with e.g. dt28-08 where God
- ASSIGNS
- WITH YOU Blessings
The connectives (WITH YOU vs TO and FROM) indicate that
the meaning is ASSIGN vs COMMAND.*10
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 Rashis actual comments on this verse are
------------------------------------------------------------
And God said to Moses: ASSIGN Joshua the task of leadership
RASHI: That is, Moses: Tell Joshua about the hardships
of leadership and how the nation isnt always (immediately)
receptive.
------------------------------------------------------------
This comment of Rashi is consistent with the translation
of the Hebrew word TSAV as ASSIGN but does not follow from
the translation COMMAND
In other words to ASSIGN SOMEONE TO A POST means to tell
him what that position involves--its hardships and
rewards.

JOSHUA: SPIRITUAL & PHYSICAL LEADER |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt03-28 uses the repeated keyword HE. A fundamental Rashi rule
is that REPEATED KEYWORDS are the Bibles way of indicating,
what are in modern notation called, bullets. In modern notation
we would write the verse as follows
-* Assign Joshua because HE will (SPIRITUALLY) lead the people
-* --------------------& HE will (MILITARALY) divide the land
The 2 bullets indicate that MILITARY conquest MUST be accompanied
by SPIRITUAL leadership even in military obvious situations.
Several other examples of this SPIRITUAL-MILITARY relationship
are exhibited.
------------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: TYPING TECHNIQUES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: BULLETS
------------------------------------------------------
BRIED DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
A modern typist has a rich variety of techniques to
indicate emphasis. Among these techniques are such
methods as
- BOLD, ITALICS, UNDERLINES
- PARAGRAPHS
- BULLETING
- TABLES
The Bible did not implement these typing techniques
the same way modern typists do. Instead the Bible had
special methods of indicating these techniques.
The Bible implemented a BULLET STRUCTURE by using a
REPEATED KEYWORD
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Here is a good example.
Lv16-32a
--------------------------------------------------------
The priest, WHO is annointed & WHOse hands are consecrated,
....will perform these day of atonement procedures
--------------------------------------------------------
EXERCISE
--------
Notice the repeated keyword. Here is the exercise.
Rewrite this verse in modern BULLET notation using
either bullets or else the repeated keyword. The
solution is immediately presented below.
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Lv16-32a (Bullet style using repeated words)
---------------------------------------------------
The priest
-- WHO is annointed
-- WHO is dressed in the 8 priestly garments
will perform these day of atonement procedures
---------------------------------------------------
Lv16-32a (Bullet style using bullets)
---------------------------------------------------
The priest
* (if) annointed
* (if) donned with the 8 priestly garments
will perform these day of atonement procedures
---------------------------------------------------
The bullets create an atmosphere of emphasis. TWO
points are being emphasized. Without the bullets I
would assume the Torah is using a conversational style:
I would assume they are talking about THE PRIEST WHO
WAS CONSECRATED BY ANNOINTMENT.
Since the bullets emphasize TWONESS we conclude that
the day of atonement procedures can be performed by
either a high priest that was annointed or else by
a high priest who was consecrated by being dressed
in the 8 garments *1

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how: If you are a teacher then you
can present the verses and then ask the students to
do 3 things
-- find the repeated keyword (for example WHO)
-- rewrite the verse in BULLET form
-- try and guess what the bullets emphasize
The student can then compare their answers with Rashis.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
The bullet structure of todays verse is repeated below
in table form. Footnotes further clarify. |
Bullet in Dt03-28c | Point of the Bullet |
HE will go before this nation | Joshua is the SPIRITUAL leader! |
HE will give the land to them | Joshua is the MILITARY Leader |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 See the next LIST for an elaboration on this concept of
SPIRITUAL Leader
|
SYMBOLS OF PRAYER |
We bring 3 verses indicating that victory occured because of
some inconsequential physical act(eg When MOSES LIFTED HIS HANDS
the Jews won and WHEN HE LET HIS HANDS DOWN they lost).
The Talmud symbolically*10 interprets this to mean: When Moses
LIFTED HIS HANDS IN PRAYER the Jews won. The other examples
are below
The Rashi method used here is SYMBOLISM
|
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE (Strange phrase CAPPED) | SYMBOLIC meaning |
Nu21-08b | When they LIFTED eyes they were cured | LIFTED in prayer |
ex17-11a | When moses RAISED HIS HANDS, Jews won | RAISED in prayer |
Dt03-28c | When Joshua LED them, Jews won | LED in prayer*1 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 As we showed in the first list in this posting, Joshua
was assigned to be BOTH the Military leader as well as
the Spiritual leader.
Without the Spiritual leading the Jews couldnt win a war.
Rashi brings in Jos07 as an example*11 of how lack of
spiritual leadership lead to a defeat from inferior forces
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 For a brief but compact introduction to symbolism read
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm
The justification for translation these verses as
symbolic is Judaisms extreme abhorance of idolatry
which includes associating Gods providence with physical
objects. LOOKING UP AT A SNAKE couldnt, to a Jewish mind,
be the cause of a cure.
By contrast, LOOKING UP has verbal associations with
PRAYER (cf Isa38-14 MY EYES LIFT UP TO HEAVEN).
As I show in that article, one is obligated to use
symbolic methods precisely when
- a literal translation is unacceptable
- the words used have clear symbolic meanings elsewhere
in the Bible.
The Talmuds explanation (brought down by Rashi) is
similar to mine
-------------------------------------------------
Does raising hands lead to winning a war?
Rather it means that when Jews looked heavenward
they won and otherwise they didnt
-------------------------------------------------
*11 My novelty in this Rashi is interpreting the Jos07 example
as ONE EXAMPLE of Rashis general point.

Moses Spoke to God 5 times |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Throughout the Torah God gave Moses commandments to Give to
the Jews. Several dozen Biblical paragraphs present these
commandments. A typical paragraph begins
----- And God spoke to Moses FOR SAYING(to others)
A database query of all dialogs BETWEEN God and Moses with
a request FOR A SAYING shows that in 5 cases Moses spoke
to God FOR SAYING(ie FOR SAYING back to him...for a request)
Apparently these were important requests and Moses so to speak
DEMANDED a RESPONSE from God (hence the phrase FOR SAYING).
(Appropriate comments are made Moses DEMANDING a response)
------------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: DATABASE
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: QUERIES
------------------------------------------------------
BRIED DESCRIPTION OF RULE and SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
Very roughly speaking modern Database theory has
rigorously defined the concept of a database query.
- A DATABASE is a collection of TABLES
- Each TABLE how ROWS and COLUMNS
- A DATABASE query is simply a REQUEST for a VIEW
--1-- The VIEW may RESTRICT the ROWS of a TABLE
----- Only ROWS meeting certain CRITERIA will be returned
--2-- Or the VIEW may JOIN tables on a common field
--3-- Or the VIEW may RESTRICT certain columns
--4-- THe VIEW may COMBINE or INTERSECT other views
- The above 4 methods are the basic methods of VIEWS
The challenge in each case is to rigorously DEFINE the
vIEW. The language for doing this is called SQL, the
STANDARD QUERY LANGUAGE. This is all straightforward
as the standard example shows
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Todays example is an excellent example
We work with the DATABASE (FILE) of all Biblical
verses. From this database we seek a VIEW.
We only want verses that
-1- CONTAIN A SPEAKING VERB--like SAY,SUPPLICATE,SCREAM..
-2- INVOLVE the SPEAKERS, GOD and MOSES
-3- Require a response (to each other or to others)
To VIEW this VIEW we can use a CD ROM and SEARCH ENGINE
-1- We require verbs meaning SPEAKING. So we look for words
(SPEAK or SAY or SUPPLICATE or SCREAM or....)
-2- We SEEK the words GOD and MOSES in the verse
(GOD TO MOSES or MOSES TO GOD)
-3- We wish responsive action so we seek the words
FOR SAYING (LAYMOR)
Any standard CD ROM (Such as the BAR ILON or DAVKA
CD ROM) can perform this search in either English or
Hebrew. The result is the VIEW of DIALOGS between
Moses and God. ONLY 5 of the verses in the view
however, involve DIALOG FROM Moses to GOD with a
request for a RESPONSE. They are listed in the LIST
below.
STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE
---------------------------------
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/rules-01.htm
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/database.htm
In the first few pages of this DATABASE article I posit
the assumption that Rashi-s primary goal was to be
a Masorite--to preserve the Biblical text. A primary
method of doing this was to take note of DATABASE
rarities. We can now succinctly formulate this using
database theory.
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how: If you are a teacher then you
can present the verses in the list and then
ask the students to make a CD ROM search that
will give this view.
The challenge to the students is to come up
with the right QUERY.
For example a student might look for all
verses with MOSES SPEAKING TO GOD.
This is only partially correct since the
student left out the the word FOR SAYING.
Similarly the student should have used
several words for SPEAKING (like SUPPLICATE
etc).
Thus the above exercises sharpen the students
search ability.(The goal is not to have the
student get the right answer-- the goal is
to get the student to practice and think)
Such database queries lead to greater appreciation
of Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
The list of 5 verses with
-- Moses and TO GOD are mentioned
-- a speaking verb (SAY, SUPPLICATE etc)
-- a request for a response (FOR SAYING)
are given in the list below. The footnotes further elaborate
on the database method. |
VERSE | VERB OF SPEECH USED | CONTENT OF REQUEST |
Ex06-12 | Moses SAID to God | Jews are tired;wont listen |
Nu27-15*1 | Moses SAID to God | Please appoint a leader |
Nu12-13*1*2 | Moses SCREAMED to GOd | Please cure Miriam |
Dt03-28*1*2 | Moses SUPPLICATED to God | Let me enter Israel |
Ex17-04 *2 | Moses SCREAMED to God | Jews angry;will stone me; |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 The Sifrah-Sifray cites the above 5 verses where Moses
spoke to God. Shockingly however, Rashi states
--------------------------------------------
There are 3 places where Moses prayed to God
--------------------------------------------
Thus the Rashi commentators have to defend Rashis picking
3 vs 5 verses.*10
There are two possible resolutions. The Sifsay Chachamim
citing the Raam explains
-----------------------------------------------------
In the above 5 cases only the 3 marked with footnote
#1 show actual prayer. The other 2 cases are not
PRAYERS but STATEMENTS.
-----------------------------------------------------
Thus Rashi adds to the Sifrah
by pointing out that of the 5 cases of Moses speaking
to God 3 are prayers.
For another approach see footnote #2
*2 The Sifrah-Sifray cites the above 5 verses where Moses
spoke to God. Shockingly however, Rashi states
--------------------------------------------
There are 3 places where Moses prayed to God
--------------------------------------------
Thus the Rashi commentators have to defend Rashis picking
3 vs 5 verses.*10
There are two possible resolutions. My approach is
-----------------------------------------------------
Of the 5 cases only 3 of them use verbs of SUPPLICATION
or SCREAMING (These are marked with footnote #2). The
other 2 cases used the traditional verbs to speak
------------------------------------------------------
Thus Rashi adds to the Sifrah by classifying the
verbs used in these 5 cases of supplication by Moses
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
*10 My own opinion is that the Proper approach to studying
Rashi is to gather all 5 verses where MOSES SPOKE TO GOD
(usually GOD SPOKE TO MOSES).
The fact that 3 of them involve PRAYER vs SPEECH is
secondary. The main fact is that
- usually God Spoke to Moses
- but in 5 cases Moses spoke to God
This is the PRIMARY FOCUS of RASHI /SIFRAH
It is also important to study the 5 cases and become
aware that only 3 of them involve words of SUPPLICATION
but this is a secondary point.
By focusing on the PRIMARY GOAL OF RASHI we obtain
a more intuitive approach to Rashi and make Rashi
more accessible to people.

* EXAMPLE 4: Gn35-22a Reuven Slept with Bilhah(Fathers concubine)
Gn49-04 Reuven PLAYED with fathers BEDS
CONCLUSION: Reuven inteferred with fathers personal

exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do
=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
---------------------------------------
Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
while DOING ITS WORK
* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
--------------------------------------------------
Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
(EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS
* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
--------------------------------------------------
Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
(EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
(GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
* The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
* The law does not apply to real-estate or slander
=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)
==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================
* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
--------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
- Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)
* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols
RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
---------------------------------------------------------------
