COMMENTS

*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
   the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
   learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
   a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
   the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
   schools or home-schooling situations.

REWARD & PUNISHMENT

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Some verses say that parents deeds SHOULD NOT affect children,
While other verses speak about these deeds affecting children for
4, 1000 or 2000 generations!The resolution of these complementary
verses can be facilitated by examining cases. There are 4 cases:
(a) If the children DONT FOLLOW their fathers SINS then they
are not punished for their parents deeds; (b) If children DO
FOLLOW parents SINS they are punished for 4 generations; (c)
If people DO FOLLOW Gods COMMANDMNETS out of FEAR they are
rewarded for 1000 generations;(d) If they DO FOLLOW Gods
COMMANDMENTS out of LOVE they are rewarded for 2000 generations.

-------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE:       RabbiIshmael
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE:    TWO CASES
-------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Some Rashis focus on the meaning of individual WORDS.
Other Rashis may focus on the grammar of Biblical VERSES.
Still other Rashis may focus not on individual words or
verses but rather on the comparison of VERSE PAIRS

There are several Rashi rules where 2 or more verses
are compared.

One of these rules focuses on VERSE PAIRS that seem to
CONTRADICT each other. These CONTRADICTIONS can be resolved
by 5 methods.

One of these methods is to carefully examine the details in
the verses; these details may motivate separating the two
contradictory verses into TWO CASES or STAGES of the
same situation

The Standard Example below illustrates this.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Consider these two verses.
------------------------------------------------------
Nu08-24 Levites come to the temple from 25 years of age
Nu04-03 Levites serve the temple from 30 years of age
------------------------------------------------------

STUDENT EXERCISES:
------------------
- How do the above verses contradict each other

- Suggest a way of resolving the contradiction by
considering the two verses as TWO CASES or STAGES of
Levite service

- Can you find words or nuances in the 2 verses supporting
what you suggested

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
- One verse says Levites START AT 25 while another
verse states they START at 30

- We can resolve the contradiction by breaking the
Levite service into two stages
- Levite education (This started at age 25)
- Actual Levite service (This started at age 30)

- One verse says Levites COME at age 25. While the other
verse speaks about SERVICE at age 30. If we emphasize
these two words we see that Levites ONLY COME at 25
(to get educated) while they start ACTUAL SERVICE at
age 30 (After a 5 year Degree program!)

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present pairs of contradictory
verses and ask the students to perform the
3 student exercises listed above.

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We cite 7 verses dealing with the complicated issue of
whether children are punished for their parents sins. These
7 verse phrases have 3 contradictions which lead to a rule
that has 4 cases. The 4 cases are sumarized above. Here is
the list with a recap of the 4 cases in the footnotes; the
contradictory verse pairs that lead to these perspectives
are also presented.
VERSETEXT OF VERSE ON REWARD & PUNISHMENT
Dt24-16Children will not die for fathers nor vise versa*1
Ex20-05Visits the sins of parents for 4 generations to ENEMIES
Dt07-10Pays ENEMIES to their face to destroy them*1
Ex34-07Visits sins of parents for 4 generations *2
---------------------------------------------------------------
Ex20-06Gives kindness to2000 generations to friends/observers*2
Ex34-07Watches kindness to 2000 generations*3
Dt07-09Guards kindnes to1000 generations to friends/observers*3
COMMENTS

*1 Note the contradictory verses
   -------------------------------------------
   Children will NOT die for fathers nor vise versa
   God visists sins of parents on children
   -------------------------------------------

   The resolution of the contradiction comes from the CAPPED
   words--ENEMIES. If CHILDREN follow their FATHERS ways and
   remain Gods ENEMIES then God does visit the sins of Fathers
   on CHILDREN. If however the FATHERS were enemies but the
   CHILDREN werent enemies that God does not visit Fathers
   sins on children

*2 Note the complementary verses
   ---------------------------------------
   Visits SINS for 4 generations
   Remembers KINDNESS for 1000 generations
   ---------------------------------------

   Thus REMEMBRANCE is 250 times greater for GOOD DEEDS
   and KINDNESS then it is for SIN. That is, SIN is punished
   for 4 generations while GOOD DEEDS is punished for 1000

*3 Note the contradiction
   ----------------------------------------------------
   God remembers Kindness for 1000 generations
   GOd remembers kindness for 2000 generations
   ----------------------------------------------------

   To resolve this contradiction we note the two classes
   of recipients mentioned: FRIENDS and OBSERVERS.

   This suggests that
   -those who serve God in friendship/love get rewarded for 2000
   -those who serve God in observance/fear get rewarded for 1000

========================================================
THE DICTIONARY RULE: Rashi can function as a dictionary.
                     He presents 2-6 meanings of words
         REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/words.htm
========================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: AL means ON. AL can also mean
      - WITH (Eat Passover WITH matzoh Ex12-09e)
      - IN (Place the Matzoh IN the basket Ex29-03)
      - TO (The boards shall be even from bottom TO top Ex26-24c)
      - NEAR (His borders will be NEAR Tzison Gn49-13b)
      - AFTER(Offer Peace offerings AFTER the daily Lv03-05a)

* EXAMPLE 2: KI means IF,PERHAPS,RATHER,BECAUSE,WHEN,THAT
   Gn18-15a Gn24-33a

* EXAMPLE 3: YDA means FAMILIAR, not KNOW (eg Dt34-10a)
	   eg Gn04-01 Adam was FAMILIAR with his wife

* EXAMPLE 4: ON THE FACE OF means DURING THE LIFETIME
            Nu03-04a Gn11-28a Ex20-03c Dt05-07a

===========================================================
THE GRAMMAR RULE: Rashi comments on RARE or SIMILAR usages
        REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.Com/grammar.htm
===========================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: BA-ah means CAME;ba-AH means COMING(Gn46-26a)

* EXAMPLE 2:THE SENTENCE: 0.2% of Biblical sentences are 2verses
 -(Dt11-07:08) It was not your fathers who saw this;rather you

* EXAMPLE 3: Hitpael has different rules if 1st root letter is
   Tzade (USE: Ni-Tz-Ta-Dack not Ni-Th-Tza-Dack--Gn44-16a)

================================================================
THE CITATION RULE: Rashi enriches meaning by citing OTHER verses
         REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.Com/other-20.htm
================================================================
* EXAMPLE 1: Dt26-05d We went down to Egypt with A FEW PEOPLE
	    ENRICHED by Gn46-27: We went down with 70 people

* EXAMPLE 2: Lv01-05a Non-priests may SLAUGHTER offerings
	    This law DERIVED from explicit statement in 2Chr30-17

* EXAMPLE 3:Why does Rashi say that Chur is Miriams son(Ex17-10b)
	    DERIVED from possible interpretation of 1-Chr18-19

* EXAMPLE 4: Gn35-22a Reuven Slept with Bilhah(Fathers concubine)
	    Gn49-04 Reuven PLAYED with fathers BEDS
        CONCLUSION: Reuven inteferred with fathers personal
	life(ruffled bedspreads); Bible condemns Reuven by
	exaggeration; he is accused of incest which he didnt do

=================================================================
THE 3 RABBI ISHMAEL RULES: They govern style(broad vs literal)
REFERENCE:http://www.RashiYomi.com/example1.htm thru example9.htm
=================================================================

* EXAMPLE 1: Simple sentences are always GENERALIZED
            ---------------------------------------
	    Dt25-04a Dont MUZZLE an OX while it is THRESHING
	    Rabbi Ishmael: Dont STOP any ANIMAL from eating
			   while DOING ITS WORK

* EXAMPLE 2: GENERAL-EXAMPLE style always interpreted LITERALLY
            --------------------------------------------------
 Nu05-12d (GENERAL) If a women DESECRATES her marriage
	   (EXAMPLE) and commits ADULTERY
	   Rabbi Ishmael: Nu05 only applies to ADULTERY.
	   It does not apply to other marriage DESECRATIONS

* EXAMPLE 3: GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style intepreted SIMILARLY
            --------------------------------------------------
 Lv05-21b (GENERAL) If a man DENIES under oath
	  (EXAMPLE) ..denies a deposit,loan,theft,wages,lost item
	  (GENERAL) or ANY DENIAL which he denies
 RABBI ISHMAEL: These laws apply to any SIMILAR Example
 * The law applies to partnerships, movables and monetary objects
 * The law does not apply to real-estate or slander

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
                that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
 EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
 RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
         But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
 RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
	     verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE        PHRASE #1       PHRASE #2       PHRASE #3
  -------      ---------       ---------       ------------------
  Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04      Dont            MAKE     idols

  RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
