COMMENTS

*1 Over the next year or so we will be writing modules for
the 2-4 dozen basic Rashi skill competencies needed for
learning Rashi. These modules will then be gathered into
a workbook which can be used at home or in schools In
the meantime each of these modules is usable in actual
   schools or home-schooling situations.

*2 Torah only allows PERSONAL USE for money, wives and horses
Torah prohibits FOR POLITICAL DISPLAY. Hence I suggest
that PERSONAL USE=1 WIFE for each distinct day in minimal
female cycle. Lo and behold minimal female cylce according
to Jewish law is 7+11=18 days. Hence the 18 wife cap on Kings

*3 I suggest that FEAR OF TEMPLE=FEAR OF SUSPECTED ADULTEROUS
WIFE CEREMONY. This solves a long-standing problem in Rashi

VERSE: Dt21-09a

BURN THE EVIL=COURT EXECUTION

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Dt21 discusses the UNKNOWN MURDER CEREMONY. The chapter
concludes that YOU WILL RECEIVE ATONEMENT AND BURN THE EVIL
FROM YOUR MIDST. It simplistically sounds that BURN THE EVIL
is simply an echo or fancy way of saying we will receive
atonement. However an examination of the several times this
phrase occurs shows that IT ALWAYS refers to a COURT ORDERED
EXECUTION. So Rashi-is-Simple and concludes that even if we
find the murderer after the atonement ceremony nevertheless
we must BURN THE EVIL and execute him/her.

----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: INFERRING MEANING
----------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE

One usage of other verses is when an enigmatic word
occurs in several verses. If just one of these verses
contains more detail then we can infer the meaning of
this enigmatic word (This rule is also one of the 13
Rabbi Ishmael Style rules which states that
------------------------------------------------------
If one verse stands out from a collection of verses
then it doesnt just stand out for itself but for
the whole group of verses; This justifies transference
of meaning to the other verses
------------------------------------------------------

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Todays example is as good as any other
---------------------------------------------------------------
Dt01-19a ... this GREAT & AWESOME desert
Dt08-15 ... this GREAT & AWESOME desert with SNAKES..SCORPIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------

EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading Rashi
-- WHAT PHRASE is repeated in both verses
-- Using a Konkordance or search engine, does this phrase
occur elsewhere in the Bible
-- What clarification does Dt08-15 give to the phrase
GREAT & AWESOME desert

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi simply explains that GREAT & AWESOME desert means
a desert with SNAKES & SCORPIONS

COMMENT:
--------
Note: That this method is almost the same as the use
of the ALIGNMENT method to discover meaning (The
difference being that ALIGNMENT applies even in the
same verse while the OTHER VERSE method applies to
2 distant verses)

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then when you
find an enigmatic phrase you can instruct your
student to
-- search for similar phrases elsewhere in the Bible
A Konkordance or search engine will help on this

-- try and find one verse where MORE DETAIL is given
on the meaning of this verse

-- try and transfer this meaning to the other verses

The students solution can then be compared with Rashis.
Very often the student can do as well as Rashi. This
inspires confidence in the students since they see
that Rashis commentary emanates from scholarship, not
from authority.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We present half a dozen verses where the phrase BURN THE EVIL
is used. In 5 of them this is a clear reference to a COURT
ORDERED EXECUTION. Hence we are justified in transferring
this meaning to the 6th case*1 *10
VERSECRIME
Dt19-13Murder
Dt19-19False witnesses
Dt21-21Rebellious son
Dt22-21Adultery sins
Dt24-07Kidnapping
Dt21-09Unknown murder*1
COMMENTS

*1 The argument is now the following
   ---------------------------------------------
In the other 5 verses BURN THE EVIL had the
meaning of COURT ORDERED EXECUTION. Hence
in this verse Dt21-09 dealing with the
UNKNOWN MURDER it must also refer to a
COURT ORDERED EXECUTION. In other words
if after performing the UNKNOWN MURDER
atonement ceremony we find the murderer
then we must still execute him/her.*11

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Technically we are using
    the Rabbi Ishmael rule
    of GENERALIZATION FROM
    SEVERAL OTHER VERSES.

    For a variety of reasons
we simply classify this as OTHER
    VERSES.

*11 An added point is the OVERALL STRUCTURE of
    Dt21-01:09
--- if you find an unknown murder
--- perform the UNKNOWN MURDER CEREMONY
    --- receive ATONEMENT
--- BURN THE EVIL(=COURT ORDERED EXECUTION)
Hence we infer that even though the whole
ceremony was completed and ATONEMENT was
received nevertheless we must BURN THE EVIL
    (Execute the murderer).

VERSE: Dt17-02a

GENERAL-DETAIL STYLE

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY:
-------------------
Dt17-01:02 contains two verses
The 1st verse gives a death penalty for VIOLATING
GODS CONVENANT (which could include anything). The 2nd
verse gives a death penalty only for WORSHIPPING IDOLS
Thus the two verses use a GENERAL-SPECIFIC style--
first the GENERAL concept of VIOLATING THE CONVENANT;
2nd the SPECIFIC concept of WORSHIPPING IDOLS
The Rabbi Ishmael style rules require, in such a case,
that the law of death penalty only apply to the specific
case of idol worship(and not to any other convenant violation)

------------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: THE RABBI ISHMAEL STYLE RULES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: GENERAL-DETAIL STYLE
------------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE AND SUBRULE
-------------------------------------
Some Rashis deal with GRAMMAR or MEANING. But other Rashis
deal with STYLE. The Great Talmudic Sage Rabbi Ishmael,
laid down 3 style rule classes which divide into a dozen
or so rules.

Today we deal with the GENERAL-DETAIL style.
When using this style the verse first states something
GENERALLY and then repeats the requirement SPECIFICALLY.

The Rabbi Ishmael Style rules then demand that the verse
be interpreted STRICTLY as applying to ONLY THE DETAILS
This requirement of STRICT interpretation is not because
of grammar or meaning or even because some word in the
verse is extra: Rather, it is a requirement of style.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The simplest example I could find occurs at Nu05-12
-----------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL: When a woman DESCECRATES her marriage
DETAIL: [by] committing ADULTERY
-----------------------------------------------------------

STUDENT EXERCISES:
-----------------
-- Suppose you didnt want to interpert the verse strictly?
How could you interpret the verse BROADLY? (The answer to
this question facilitates understanding what not to do)

-- How would you apply the Rabbi Ishmael requirement
of STRICT INTERPRETATION to Nu05-12

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
-- WE FIRST SHOW HOW TO INTERPRET THE CHAPTER BROADLY
The chapter if not interpreted strictly COULD refer
to a woman who descecrates her marriage by (a) insulting
her husband in public or (b) flirting with other men.
That is, if we werent required to interpret the chapter
strictly we COULD HAVE required the suspected-woman
ceremony to ANY descecration of marriage.

-- WE NEXT SHOW HOW TO INTERPRET THE CHAPTER STRICTLY
The above chapter (Nu05) dealing with the Suspected
woman ceremony ONLY APPLIES IF THE WOMAN WAS SUSPECTED
OF COMMITTING ADULTERY. For example if the woman descecrated
her marriage by insulting her husband or flirting with other
men there is no justification for performing the suspected
woman ceremony. IN other words Nu05-12 is interpreted STRICTLY

IDOL WORSHIP PROHIBITION

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
By aligning the various idol prohibitions in the Torah
we see that the Torah prohibited all aspects of idol involvement.
-- Dont OWN idols (Ex20-03)
-- Dont MAKE idols (Ex20-03)
-- Dont WORSHIP idols (Ex20-03)
-- Dont MANUFACTURE idols (Ex34-19)
-- Dont MAKE idols (For others) (Lv26-01)
Because of this context, when the Torah prohibits making tree
idols Rashi assumes the same comprehensiveness of prohibition
--that is we shouldnt PLANT, OWN, WORSHIP tree idols

----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER NUANCES
----------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.

But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.

The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances. The standard example will illustrtae this.

STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Recall that the Moabite King BALAK was apprehensive about
Israel journeying throught its territory. It wanted Israel
banished. It hired a professional curse-man, Bilam who would
curse the Jews. Bilam however describes his job SLIGHTLY
differently. Here are the verses.

-----------------------------------------------
BALAK: Nu22-06 I will banish Jews FROM THE LAND
BILAM: Nu22-11 ...... banish Jews -------------
-----------------------------------------------

EXERCISE
--------
To fully appreciate Rashi perform the following 2 exercises
- What is the minor difference between the aligned verses?
- What NUANCE do YOU think this implies?

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
BALAK only wanted Jews away from his land; his goals were
political. By contrast, BILAM wanted them DESTROYED. Hence...

BALAK wanted Jews BANISHED FROM THE LAND. But Bilam wanted
them BANISHED PERIOD (That is destroyed).

teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
following exercises

-- What are the minor differences between the verses
-- What nuances do they imply

The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We align the verses prohibiting idol worsihp and examine the
nuance of each one. Using this list we see a deeper meaning
to the Rashi comments on the verse of making tree-idols.
VERSENUANCEEXACT TEXT OF VERSE

COMMENTS

*1 See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/lv19-03b.htm for the original
posting on this subject with added support from the Malbim
An obscure statement in Rashi is explained in the footnotes*10

*2 In the posting mentioned in footnote#1 we also brought Ex34-17
   ---------------------
   Dont make molten gods
   ---------------------
Molten objects tend to be made more in manufacturing
proceses rather than for personal use

*3 In context, Rashi now makes more sense. It is not the nuances
of the word PLANT, but rather, the fact that idolatry
prohibitions (for idols) refer to the whole idolatry process
-- manufacture, purchase, ownership, worship. Hence by
analogy the prohibitions on idolatrous trees also refer to
the whole process. I think the LIST above gives greater depth
   to the Rashi.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi makes two points.

First Rashi points out that the entire chapter Lv25 is
    written in a climactic fashion
    ------------------------------------------
    Lv25-25:28 Sale of PROPERTY
    Lv25-29:34 Sale of HOUSES
    Lv25-35:38 LOANING money
Lv25-39:46 Sale of ONESELF (to jews)
Lv25-47:55 Sale of ONESELF (to non-jews)
    ------------------------------------------

    Hence in context, Lv26-01
    -----------------
    Dont make idols
    -----------------

    is interpreted to mean
    ----------------------------------------
Dont make idols while sold to a non-jew
    ----------------------------------------

Rashis second point elaborates on the first point
Rashi gives examples showing how you might want
    to imitate oa non-jewish boss
    --------------------------------------------------------
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE RASHIS COMMENTS
    -------- ----------------- -----------------------------
Lv26-01 Dont make idols RASHI: The way your boss does
Lv26-02 Dont violate Sbth RASHI: The way your boss does
Lv26-02 Fear the temple RASHI: Dont commit adultery
    --------------------------------------------------------

All the Rashi commentators seek the connection between
    -----------------------
    fearing the temple
    ----------------------

    and

    -----------------------
    committing adultery
    -----------------------

I would simply suggest that FEAR THE TEMPLE refers to
    Nu05---the SUSPECTED ADULTEROUS WIFE CEREMONY.

In other words, even though you are under the aegis
of a non-jew, you should still fear Temple ceremonies
which would uncover and punish adultery

EXCESS FOR KINGS

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
-----------------
The Bible in Dt17 states that it is prohibited to have
-- excessive MONEY,
-- excessive WIVES
-- excessive HORSES
The exact phraselogy is
-- The King should not have alot FOR HIMSELF
The phrase FOR HIMSELF when combined with a Hebrew verb always
denotes PERSONAL USE. Hence Rashi simply states that
-- Kings can have MONEY, WIVES and HORSES for regal use but not
-- for personal display.Other verses help illustrate how much

--------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
--------------------------------------------------------

Brief description of rule
--------------------------
In Hebrew, adding the indirect pronoun (FOR ME, FOR HIMSELF)
denotes that the activity is done FOR PERSONAL REASONS. For
many illustrations of this principle see the following posting
(reproduced below)

http://www.RashiYomi.htm/nu10-02a.htm

Very often when a verse states a general principle--e.g. a
king should not have TOO MUCH of women, money horses--we
can infer further details by examining OTHER VERSES which
shed light on the definition.

TODAYS LISTS
------------
We list the 3 items prohibited to Kings. We provide other
verses showing that Kings can have AS MUCH AS NECESSARY
FOR REGAL USE. Hence we interpret the verses as THEY
CANT HOWEVER HAVE FOR PERSONAL USE. Footnotes amplify
the supporting verses

A second verse shows how FOR YOU or FOR HIM indicates
personal use.

COMMENTS

*1 This verse is not brought by Rashi but it shows that Kings
may have much wealth as King Solomon had much wealth (The
Bible only criticizes him for taking more wives than allowed)

   Hence the defining criterion is
   ---------------------------------------------
---More than is needed for personal regal use
   ---------------------------------------------

*2 This verse is brought by Rashi. It shows that Kings may
have large amounts of horses for chariots (Again the BIble
only criticizes King Solomon for taking many wives). As
long as the horses are for Regal matters it is not
   considered
   ------------------------------
   -----Making alot for himself
   ------------------------------

*3 The Bible criticizes King Solomon for taking too many
wives.(1K11) It is however no where explicitly defined
   what TOO MANY WIVES means.

Tradition states 18. There are obscure derivations
from 2S12-08 which speaks about King David
   --------------------------------------------
Being allow wives AND MORE AND MORE
   --------------------------------------------

The double AND MORE AND MORE suggests that King
David could have had 3 times the number of wives
   he had (3 x 6 =18).

Rambam (Kings 3 and 4) simply states that this
is a TRADITION (That is--it is known but not really
   derived from the verses).

I would argue that the concept of PERSONAL ALLOWANCE
would entitle a King for a different wife for every
day during the minimal Biblical female cycle. Since
the minimal Biblical female cycle is 18 days
(Rambam Forbidden Intercourses Chapter 6) it would
follow that a King could have 18 wives. More than
that would be considered MARRIAGE FOR POLITICAL
REASONS (As King Solomon did). (I hasten to add
that while the above is logical it is nevertheless
   speculative)

FOR ME=PERSONAL

The following LIST contains many verses where FOR YOU refers
to PERSONAL use.
VERSETEXT OF VERSEFOR YOU/ME=PERSONAL
Dt17-16Dont FOR YOURSELF have much moneyOnly to run royl house

Ex25-02aTake for ME Temple giftsDedicated to me
Ex18-27a& he went for HIMSELF to his landFor personal reasons*1
Nu10-01bmake for YOURSELF to trumpetsPersonal use*2
COMMENTS

*1 BACKGROUND: The previous chapter Ex18 states how much Jethro
admired Gods salvation of the Jews from Egypt. Hence if
the verse states JETHRO RETURNED FOR PERSONAL REASONS
TO HIS COUNTRY, Rashi conjectures that he probably
went to convert his friends and family to Noachidic
belief in God, and founded the SOCIETY OF FRIENDS
   OF JETHRO (Jud04-11)

*2 A simple approach to reading Rashi is as follows:
The phrase MAKE FOR YOURSELF implies that there was
SOMETHING PERSONAL about the making of the trumpets.
So Rashi is careful NOT to take sides but simply to
give 3 examples of WHAT could be PERSONAL about them.
   --------------------------------------------------------
PERSONAL IN PURPOSE Trumpets blasts honor Moses as King
PERSONAL IN SOURCE Trumpets were made from Moses funds
PERSONAL IN USERS Only Moses (no one else) could blow
   --------------------------------------------------------

Thus these 3 Rashis should be read as one continuous
Rashi containing 3 possibilities on MAKE FOR YOURSELF.
An examination of manuscripts shows that some Chumashim
combine 2 of these Rashis into one. Thus our suggestion
   seems feasable.

An alternative explanation is presented below.

=================================================================
THE CLIMAX RULE: The Bible should be interpreted in such a manner
that it reflects CLIMACTIC development to a goal
             REFERENCE: http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example9.htm
=================================================================
EXAMPLE 1: Dt19-11a If a man HATES, SPIES, CONFRONTS & KILLS
RASHI: Bible identifies 4 stages to murder(Capped)

==============================================================
THE FORMATTING PRINCIPLE: Bible had its own method to mimic
                          bold, bullets, footnotes, paragraphs
==============================================================

* BOLD: Bible REPEATS words to obtain BOLD emphasis effect
          http://www.RashiYomi.Com/doubl-14.htm
  --------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
  INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)

* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
  --------------------------------------------------------
 Who am I
 - THAT I should go to Pharaoh
 - THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
 --------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
 - Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
 - Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)

* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
                http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
  ---------------------------------------------------------------
  EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
  VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
  ------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
  Ex20-04 Dont MAKE idols

RASHI: So both POSSESSion & MAKING of idols are prohibited
