BACKGROUND
----------
I have been teaching local Rashi groups in my synagogues
in Philadelphia and Baltimore for the past 10 years. My
Shomrey Emunah Rashi groups disintegrated recently but it
just restarted. I hope to bring you comments from them
regularly. Here is a nifty comment on a recent Rashi is Simple
(References above)
QUESTION
---------
You translated BEFORE GOD as RELIGIOUSLY. Thus the statement
THEY ATE BEFORE GOD means it was a RELIGIOUS meal. Similarly
the statement WALK BEFORE ME means BECOME RELIGIOUS.
However, to many people the word religious has a connotation
of MORE STRINGENCIES
The Shomrey Emunah Rashi Group
LONGER FOOTNOTES |
ANSWER
-------
Correct.
Instead, it would be preferable to use the word
SPIRITUAL. For example, we would translate
-- WALK BEFORE ME means BECOME MORE SPIRITUAL
-- THEY ATE BEFORE GOD means THE MEAL WAS SPIRITUAL
I think this gives a richer interpretation which meets
the concerns you mention

VERSE: Gn12-13a
Pharohs Gifts to Abraham |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
When Abraham & Sarah approached Egypt Abraham was nervous that
he would be killed so that the Egytians could marry Sarah.
Abraham states to Sarah
-Make believe you are my sister (so they wont have
-to kill me to marry you) in order that they
-TREAT ME NICELY and let me live
Gn12-16 states AND THE EGYPTIANS TREATED ABRAHAM NICELY
AND GAVE HIM GIFTS. So Rashi is Simple: He uses this OTHER VERSE,
Gn12-16 to interpret the request,TREAT ME NICELY in Gn12-13.
---------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS
---------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi
is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE
One way of doing this is to cross reference a
verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives
FURTHER details.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
The following example comes from the Passover
Hagaddah
Dt26-05 states that
-------------------------------
With only a FEW PEOPLE did the
Jews go down to Egypt
-------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of
the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is
provided in Gn46.
EXERCISE:
---------
Before reading the Rashi try reading
Gn46 yourself and see if you can
discover the further details.
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi cites Gn46-27
-----------------------------
The total number of people who
came with Jacob to Egypt is 70
-----------------------------
Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES
in this case has explained to us that
the FEW PEOPLE that went down to
Egypt refers to SEVENTY people

HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LIST below for school projects.
Here is how, if you are a teacher then you
can present the verse in the first column
(eg Dt26-05) and the CHAPTER (but not the verse)
in the 3rd column---e.g. Gn46.
The student is then instructed to discover
the further details. The students solution
can then be compared with Rashis.
TODAYS EXAMPLE

The new verse mentioned above is the first example on the list

Lv13-46b | Expel lepers from CAMP | Lv13-46 | From all 3camps*1 |
Nu05-02b | Expel impure from CAMP | Ex13-19 | impure to dead*1 |
| | | |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 First some background: There were 3 camps
-- There was the TEMPLE which had the highest holiness
-- Outside this was the CAMP OF LEVITES (Nu02-17)
-- Outside this was the CAMP OF TRIBES (Nu02)
These camps surrounded each others like concentric
squares (The Temple in the center, the Levites
surrounding them, the tribes surrounding the Levites)
Nu05-02 states that ALL IMPURE PEOPLE should be expelled
from the camp without specifying which one.Rashi-is-Simple
- Lv13-46 states that the LEPOR should be ISOLATED. Hence
he is expelled from ALL 3 camps
- Ex13-19 states that Moses took the bones of Joseph with
him. But Moses was a Levite and dwelled among the
Levites. Hence we infer that someone who is impure
because of contact with the dead may stay in the LEVITE
camp but may not stay in the TEMPLE CAMP.
- We find no permission for the Zav to be in the Levite
camp and we do have a requirement for the Lepor to
be isolated. Hence we infer that the Zav may dwell in
the Israelite camp (so as to leave the lepor ALONE)
but may not dwell in the Temple or Levite camp.
The Talmud (Pesachim 67) goes into further details and
alternative derivations but the above captures the
flavor of the argument which is based on other verses.

Pharoh Gave Abe Gifts |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Gn12-10:16 describes how when Abraham & Sarah came to Egypt the
Egyptians praised Sarahs beauty and bribed Abraham with gifts
(in order to marry her). An analysis of the pluality of the
verbs shows that Pharoh himself gave Abraham the gifts
-- Gn12-14 When Abraham came to Egypt THEY (Egyptians) saw her
-- Gn12-15 and THEY, Pharohs servants saw her
-- Gn12-15 and THEY praised her to Pharoh(& Sarah was taken)
-- Gn12-16 and HE treated Abraham nicely for her sake
Thus the contrast of verb pluralities (THEY vs HE) shows that
it was Pharoh himself who gave the gifts to Abraham.

TODAYS RASHI RULE GRAMMARr
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE PLURALITY AGREEMENT
---------------------------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RASHI RULE AND SUBRULE
-------------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain grammar the same way
a dictionary explains grammar. There are various aspects to
grammar including verb conjugation, gender agreement, plurality
agreement etc. In todays posting we focus on a shift from PLURAL
to SINGULAR in the same passage. This suggests that first the
GROUP (PLURAL) did the activity and then the INDIVIDUAL(SINGULAR)
did the activity.

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We list the verses in Gn12-14:16 which clearly shows the contrast
between the Egyptians and Pharoh. |
VERSE | THEY-HE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH VERB |
Gn12-14 | THEY*1 | The Egyptians saw her (that she was beautiful) |
Gn12-15 | THEY,*1 | Pharohs servants,saw her |
Gn12-15 | THEY*1 | praised her to Pharoh(& Sarah was taken) |
Gn12-16 | HE*1 | treated Abraham nicely for her sake |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Thus The EGYPTIANS (PLURAL) praised Abraham while
PHAROH (SINGULAR) was the one who gave gifts to Abraham

LOT WANTED TO SAVE MONEY |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Gn19-16:17 contrasts two phrases
-- LOT DELAYED (leaving Sedom) [He wanted to ........]
-- ANGELS PUSHED HIM TO LEAVE Save your LIFE
There is clearly a contrast between LOTs delay and the ANGELS
PUSHING him. Although the verse doesnt state why Lot delayed
nevertheless the alignment contrasts it with SAVING HIS LIFE
This suggests that Lot delayed to save his MONEY.
----------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER NUANCES
----------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.
But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.
The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances. The standard example will illustrtae this.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
----------------
Recall that the Moabite King BALAK was apprehensive about
Israel journeying throught its territory. It wanted Israel
banished. It hired a professional curse-man, Bilam who would
curse the Jews. Bilam however describes his job SLIGHTLY
differently. Here are the verses.
-----------------------------------------------
BALAK: Nu22-06 I will banish Jews FROM THE LAND
BILAM: Nu22-11 ...... banish Jews -------------
-----------------------------------------------
EXERCISE
--------
To fully appreciate Rashi perform the following 2 exercises
- What is the minor difference between the aligned verses?
- What NUANCE do YOU think this implies?
RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
BALAK only wanted Jews away from his land; his goals were
political. By contrast, BILAM wanted them DESTROYED. Hence...
BALAK wanted Jews BANISHED FROM THE LAND. But Bilam wanted
them BANISHED PERIOD (That is destroyed).

The ALIGNMENT series occurs between 7-28-01 and 10-10-01.
HOW TO USE THESE LISTS FOR SCHOOL PROJECTS
------------------------------------------
You can use the LISTS referenced above for
school projects. Here is how. If you are a
teacher then you can present the two aligned
verses and ask the students to perform the
following exercises
-- What are the minor differences between the verses
-- What nuances do they imply
The students can then compare their analysis with that
of Rashis. This leads to greater appreciation of Rashi.
TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
We align Gn19-16:17. The alignment hints that Lot wanted to
save his bank account |
VERSE | Phrase1 | Phrase2 |
Gn19-16a | Lot delayed | [Save my money] |
Gn19-16b | They pushed him | Save your SOUL |
Differs | *1 | *2 |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*1 Note the contrast: Lot DELAYED; the angels PUSHED
*2 So the Angels pushed lot to SAVE HIS LIFE. Apparently
then Lot delayed to SAVE something else. The traditional
contrast with LIFE is MONEY. Hence the Rashi
-----------------------------
Lot delayed to save his money

BLESSED IN YOU |
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis discoveries is the idea that meaning is not
only identified with a root but rather with the combination
of a ROOT+PREPOSITION. That is, the meaning of a ROOT depends
on the PREPOSITION following it. In this posting we review
the meaning of the root beth-resh-caph. When followed by no
preposition it means TO BLESS. But when followed by the
preposition IN (BLESSED IN YOU) it means a BLESSING STANDARD.
Thus the famous Gn48-20 JEWS WILL BLESS IN EPHRAIM/MENASEH means
(According to Gn48-20) that when Jews bless their children
they say MAY YOU BECOME AS BLESSED AS EPHRAIM/MENASHEH

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RASHI RULE AND SUBRULE
-------------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain grammar the same way
a dictionary explains grammar. There are various aspects to
grammar including verb conjugation, gender agreement, plurality
agreement etc. In todays posting we focus on a brilliant
discovery of the Malbim: The meaning of Hebrew words is not
dependent only on 3 letter roots but rather is dependent on
the combination of 3 letter roots with prepositions.

http://www.RashiYomi.com/grammar.htm
http://www.RashiYomi.com/by-rule.htm
One may scroll down and find numerous Rashis using this
ROOT+PREPOSITION principle.
The Malbim states this principle on Lv01-01 (CALL TO in Hebrew
does NOT mean to CALL but rather means to PAGE)
TODAYS LIST
-----------
We list several verses where BLESS IN means to become a
BLESSING STANDARD |
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE with PHRASE blessed by you*1 |
Gn48-20 | BY YOU will people bless--(They-ll say)Become like them |
Ps72-17 | His name will be forever;in blazing light; BLESS BY HIM |
Jr04-02 | nations will BLESS BY YOU; BY YOU BE PRAISED |
------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
Gn12-03 | (Abraham) All nations will be BLESSED by YOU |
Gn18-18 | (Isaac) All nations will be BLESSED by you |
Gn28-14 | (Jacob) All nations will be BLESSED by you |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 In the top 3 verses the identification of
-----------------
BLESSED IN YOU
-----------------
with
------------------------------------------------
People will say MAY YOU BE AS BLESSED AS SO & SO
------------------------------------------------
is explicit.
This identification is then transferred to the bottom 3 verses
That is we identify the verse blessing: NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED
IN THE JEWS with the idea that people will say MAY YOU BE AS
BLESSED AS THE JEWS

--------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
