VERSE: Ex18-27a
RULE: Adding the expression "FOR YOURSELF" or "FOR HIMSELF"
to a verb expression indicates that the activity was done
for PERSONAL reasons
EXAMPLES
--------
(1) Nu13-02b "send FOR YOURSELF spies"
RASHI: If you feel like sending spies, do so (ie
the sentence "send spies" is an order; by contrast
the sentnece "send for yourself spies" gives
permission to send spies if Moses wanted to
(2) Ex25-08a "make FOR ME a temple"
RASHI: Dedicate it for MY SAKE*2
(3) Ex25-02a "and take FOR ME Terumah"
RASHI: Raise the Terumah FOR MY SAKE*2
(4) Ex18-27 "He returned FOR HIMSELF to his land"
RASHI: He didn't just return but rather returned
for personal reasons *1
NOTES
-----
*1 Rashi suggests based on explicit other verses
that Jethro returned home and was so impressed by Gods
salvation of the Jewish people that he founded his famous
Friends of Jethro Society which encouraged non jews to
acknowledge God. (cf Ju01-16, Ju04-11, Ju04-17)
*2 I have spoken to many Rabbinical scholars but no one
seems to have an explanation as to what laws are learned
from this emphasis on FOR MY SAKE in these verses
