EXAMPLE: Lv07-12a http://www.RashiYomi.com/h13n15.htm EXAMPLE: Lv04-20a http://www.RashiYomi.com/h13n13.htm --------------------------------------- TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS --------------------------------------- BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE ----------------------------------------- The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE One way of doing this is to cross reference a verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives more details. STANDARD EXAMPLE ---------------- The following example comes from the Passover Hagaddah Dt26-05 states that ------------------------------- With only a FEW PEOPLE did the Jews go down to Egypt ------------------------------- FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is provided in Gn46-27 ----------------------------- The total number of people who came with Jacob to Egypt is 70 ----------------------------- Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES in this case has explained to us that FEW PEOPLE means SEVENTY people STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE --------------------------------- http://www.Rashiyomi.com/other-20.htm Todays example is presented in the list below with other similar examples.*1*2 More details may be found in the footnotes in the references which were omitted here. | |||

*1 Rashi explainss that the THANK YOU(Lv01-12a) offering is an offering brought when a person feels like saying THANK YOU to God. This is amplified with FURTHER DETAIL in Ps107-12 which lists 4 circumstances for which people should say THANK YOU to God: Survivors of (a)a Ship Journey (b)..an illness (c)..a prison sentence (d) a desert journey *2 Lv04-20 states ------------------------------------------------- Offer fat for the PRIEST SIN OFFERING the same way you offer fat for the PEACE OFFERING ------------------------------------------------- But the Bible explicitly ALREADY lists all details in both chapters (e.g. Fat of kidneys, finger of liver etc..these items are both listed in the verses) So Rashi explains that the priest sin offering was LIKE the peace offerings in OTHER RESPECTS as well --eg the atonement for the priest brings PEACE to the world(even though it comes on sin) |
